The names of outstanding military leaders Fedir Ushakov and Oleksandr Suvorov are connected with the history of the city. In 1785-1789, the famous English doctor and philanthropist Dzhon Hovard worked and died here. For a long time, the city remained the poorest provincial center of Russia, but the deepening of the Dnipro estuary and the laying of the railway turned it into a significant trading port, which it remains to this day.
At the beginning of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine, the city of Kherson was temporarily occupied by Russian troops. Released on November 11, 2022.
