Podil fire tower of the Chernobyl Museum will become an observation deck

The fire tower in Kyiv Podil will open as an observation deck after the restoration and repair of the National Chernobyl Museum is completed. The completion of the work is scheduled for the end of April, the State Historical and Architectural Reserve "Ancient Kyiv" reports on its official website.

Restoration work in the museum building began in October 2024, and last year the exhibition was temporarily closed to visitors due to dangerous damage.

"During the preparation of the project, emergency areas were discovered on the roof and tower, and archaeological research was also conducted - the found artifacts replenished the museum's collections. After April 26, 2025, on the Day of Remembrance of the Chernobyl Disaster, the museum was temporarily closed to visitors," the reserve reminded.

The fire station building with a tower over 20 meters high appeared in Kyiv's Podil back in 1910. Its design was developed by city architect Eduard Bradtman. The complex consisted of a two-story building and a watchtower, which became the visual accent of the building and the high-rise dominant of the district. The first floor housed boxes for fire crews, and on the courtyard side - rooms for inventory, the fire brigade and the police station.

Earlier, the museum reported that it plans to restore the authentic appearance of the facades of the building from the beginning of the 20th century. An observation deck on the tower is also to be opened. The construction of an underground shelter for 96 people is underway. Since the building is a monument of local architectural significance, located on a monument of local archaeological significance, museum workers previously conducted archaeological research together with the Institute of Archaeology.

After the renovation, the museum will not only increase its exhibition space and update its exposition, but will also become barrier-free. In particular, an elevator will connect the first and third floors. Special information signs and 3D models will be placed for people with visual impairments.

As a reminder, on April 26, 2026, the world will mark a sad anniversary - 40 years since the Chernobyl disaster.

Пожежна каланча на Подолі у Києві відкриється як оглядовий майданчик після завершення реставрації та ремонту Національного музею "Чорнобиль". Завершення робіт заплановане на кінець квітня, повідомляє Державний історико-архітектурний заповідник "Стародавній Київ" на офіційному сайті.

Реставраційні роботи у будівлі музею розпочалися в жовтні 2024 року, а минулого року експозицію тимчасово закрили для відвідування через небезпечны пошкодження.

"Під час підготовки проєкту виявили аварійні ділянки на даху та башті, а також провели археологічні дослідження – знайдені артефакти поповнили музейні фонди. Після 26 квітня 2025 року, у День пам’яті Чорнобильської катастрофи, музей тимчасово закрився для відвідувачів", – нагадали в заповіднику.

Будівля пожежної частини з каланчею висотою понад 20 метрів постала на київському Подолі ще у 1910 році. Її проєкт розробив міський архітектор Едуард Брадтман. Комплекс складався з двоповерхового корпусу та дозорної вежі, що стала візуальним акцентом споруди й висотною домінантою району. На першому поверсі розміщувалися бокси для пожежних екіпажів, а з боку двору – приміщення для інвентарю, пожежної команди та поліцейського відділення.

Раніше музей повідомляв, що планує відновити автентичний вигляд фасадів будівлі початку XX століття. Також має відкритися оглядовий майданчик на вежі. Триває облаштування підземного укриття на 96 осіб. Оскільки будівля є пам’яткою архітектури місцевого значення, що розташована на пам’ятці археології місцевого значення, музейники попередньо провели археологічні дослідження спільно з Інститутом археології.

Після реновації у музеї не тільки збільшаться експозиційні площі та оновиться експозиція, але й він стане безбар’єрним. Зокрема, перший і третій поверхи з'єднає ліфт. Для людей з порушенням зору розмістять спеціальні інформаційні таблички та 3D-моделі.

Нагадаємо, 26 квітня 2026 року світ відзначить сумний ювілей – 40 років трагедії на ЧАЕС.
