So far, the priests of the UOC-MP, contrary to the court's decision, refuse to allow representatives of the Shevchenko National Reserve to enter the monument.
The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine has returned the Assumption (St. George) Cathedral in Kaniv to state ownership through the court. Further operational management of the monument will be carried out by the Shevchenko National Reserve, the press service of the Ministry of Culture reported.
"For the past 20 years, the cathedral has been illegally owned by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
Thanks to the systematic and persistent work of the team of the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine, together with the Smilyansky District Prosecutor's Office of Cherkasy Region, we managed to restore justice and ensure the registration of property rights and legal registration of the return of the monument to state ownership," the report says.
The cathedral, founded in 1144 at the expense of the Grand Duke of Kiev Vsevolod Olkhovych, has survived many historical trials - Mongol-Tatar invasions, destruction by the Turks and Tatars, as well as repeated reconstruction by the Ukrainian Cossacks. In the 18th century, the temple was restored and became part of a monastery. The place remembers many significant events in Ukrainian history. A memorial service for the executed in Lviv Hetman Ivan Pidkova was held in the cathedral, and the body of Taras Shevchenko was buried here before his burial on Chernecha Hill.
"This event is another step in the struggle for the restoration of historical justice," the ministry said.
According to the director of the Shevchenko National Reserve, Valentyna Kovalenko, the reserve hopes to gain access to the monument this week. According to her, the day before, the former rector of the church, Father Yuriy, refused to let the commission to inspect the monument into the premises, citing the fact that the Kyiv diocese had not given its blessing.
