The large village of Toporivtsi is located 15 kilometers northeast of Chernivtsi. Known since the 12th century, the name is associated with the surname of the local feudal lord Topora.
In 1412, the village was mentioned in the deed of the Moldavian master Oleksandr Dobriy during the transfer of the inheritance. It was under Turkish rule for two centuries.
One of the oldest Illinska churches in Bukovina, built in 1560 by Voivode Barnovskyi, has been preserved. Another landmark is the new Sxaint Illya Church (1914), which impresses with its uncharacteristic architecture in the style of romantic castles for Orthodoxy.
Topor's handicrafts are popular - brightly embroidered taystra bags.
New Saint Illya Church
Temple , Architecture
An amazing Orthodox church in terms of architecture, outwardly reminiscent of romantic castles.
The residents of the village of Toporivtsi received permission to build a new Saint Illya Church from Emperor Frants-Yosyf in 1911, when the old Saint Illya Church ceased to accommodate all parishioners.
It was built in 1914 under the direction of German and Czech architects in traditional Romanian architectural forms. A clock is installed on one of the towers.
Currently, the New Saint Illya Church belongs to the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate.
Saint Illya Church
Temple , Architecture
An archaic temple of defensive type, one of the oldest buildings on the territory of Bukovyna.
The Saint Illya Church was built in Toporivtsi in 1560 by the governor Myron Barnovsky. During the Turkish rule, the building was actively used as a fortress. It has thick walls without windows, loopholes are placed around the perimeter at the level of the roof, and a battle tier is hidden under the shingle roof. A square stone two-story bell tower was the main entrance to the temple grounds.
Currently, the Saint Illya Church belongs to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, so local residents call it "Ukrainian".
