Mena

The city of Mena is located among the forests and meadows, rivers and lakes of the Polissya Prydesenya, 70 kilometers east of Chernihiv. Administratively, it is part of the Koryukivka district of the Chernihiv region.

The official date of Mena's foundation is 1408, when the Mena prince Urustai is mentioned in the annals. Other sources attribute the first mention of Mena to 1066, when the city was captured by Svyatoslav and Vsevolod Yaroslavych. The name of the city of Mena may come from the river of the same name, on which it is located, or it may be related to its transit and trade status.

In the first half of the 17th century, there was a fortress in Mena with an earthen rampart, walls made of oak logs, three gates and 12 towers, as well as the Mena Castle of Chernihiv castellan Adam Kisyl (traces can be traced along Troyitska Street). In 1654, the Mena Hundred of the Nizhyn Regiment was created.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a quarter of the inhabitants were Jews, who were mainly engaged in trade operations with tobacco, which is why Mena was called the "tobacco capital" (a separate Jewish cemetery has been preserved).

Architectural monuments in Mena have not been preserved. A botanical monument of nature of local importance is an ancient oak tree on the central street. But the main visit card of the city is the Mena Zoo, created in 1977 by local animal lovers.

The traditional Trinity Fair in Mena is held every year on Green Sunday.

На початку XX століття чверть мешканців становили євреї, що переважно займалися торговими операціями з тютюном, через що Мену називали "тютюновою столицею" (зберігся окремий єврейський цвинтар).

Архітектурні пам'ятки у Мені не збереглися. Ботанічною пам'яткою природи місцевого значення є віковий дуб на центральній вулиці. Та головною візитною карткою міста є Менський зоопарк, створений у 1977 році місцевим любителям тварин.

Традиційний Троїцький ярмарок у Мені проводиться щороку на Зелену неділю.
