General information about Bakhmach

Bakhmach on the Borzenka River is a city of railway workers. The fortified settlement of Bakhmach was first mentioned in the annals in 1147. The name has Turkic roots and means "bashnan".

In the 13th-14th centuries, there was the Bakhmach principality. At the beginning of the 18th century, hetman Ivan Mazepa built a palace here, in which he held secret meetings with supporters.

The current city was founded in 1860-1870 during the construction of the railway. Railway branches of five directions cross here: Moscow, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Minsk and Kyiv. The station, built in 1954, is the centerpiece of the city.
