Chuhuiv

The city of Chuhuiv is located on the banks of the Siverskyi Donets, 35 kilometers southeast of Kharkiv, one of the oldest cities of the Slobozhanshchyna region.

It was founded by the Zaporozhzhian hetman Yakiv Ostryanytsia in 1638 on the site of the Chuhuiv settlement that existed in pre-Mongol times. According to one version, the name comes from the word "chuha", which means leather armor. Another version connects the name with the word "chuhunye", which in Turkic means "border", "border land". On the site of the present-day square of the Ostryanytsia Cossack Cathedral, a wooden spur fortress with 8 towers and secret passageways to the river was built.

The city lost its strategic importance after the construction of a chain of fortresses of the Ukrainian Defense Line in 1731-1733, but the city remained an important military settlement. In 1817-q858, Chuhuiv was the center of six military districts. The building of the headquarters of military settlements with a clock tower and other army buildings: a school and barracks remind us of these times.

The building of the city administration, shopping rows with a gallery, the Intercession Cathedral, residential one-story stone houses that had defensive significance have also been preserved.

In 1844, the artist Illya Repin was born in one of them - now it is an art-memorial museum, two rooms of the Repin family house exhibit the artist's paintings.

During Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Chuhuiv is systematically subjected to artillery and missile strikes by Russian forces on civilian infrastructure. Shelling continues from February 24, 2022. On the evening of February 25, the city was occupied by the Russian military. Already on March 7, the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated the city from the occupiers, but the shelling of the city by Russia did not subside. Chuhuiv was heavily destroyed, many civilians were killed and injured.

В 1817-1858 роках Чугуїв був центром шести військових округів. Про ці часи нагадує будівля штабу військових поселень з годинниковою вежею й інші армійські споруди: училище та казарми.

Також збереглася будівля міської управи, торгові ряди з галереєю, Покровський собор, житлові одноповерхові кам'яні будинки, що мали оборонне значення.

В 1844 році в одному з них народився художник Ілля Рєпін - зараз це художньо-меморіальний музей, в двох кімнатах садиби Рєпіних експонують картини художника.

Під час повномасштабного вторгнення росії в Україну в 2022 році Чугуїв систематично піддається артилерійським та ракетним ударам російськими військами по цивільній інфраструктурі. Обстріли тривають від 24 лютого 2022 року. 25 лютого надвечір місто було окуповано російськими військовими. Вже 7 березня Збройні сили України звільнили місто від окупантів, проте обстріли міста росією не вщухли. Чугуїв зазнав сильних руйнувань, багато мирних мешканців загинуло та було травмовано.
