The village of Ryzhany on the Irsha River is located 50 kilometers north of Zhytomyr. Administratively, it is part of Zhytomyr district of Zhytomyr region.
It was mentioned in documents for the first time in 1501 under the names Rezan, Hrezhan, Hryzhany. In the 16th century, Hryzhany was the center of a parish that belonged to the Lithuanian magnates Sapehas. The wooden church of the Nativity of the Virgin was built in 1900-1914 on the site of an older church that was moved to the village of Nova Bobrytsia.
The village of Ryzhany is known as the center of production of linen fabrics.
Subdivisions of the Ryzhany Historical and Local Lore Museum, which functions at the local lyceum, are the Flax Museum and the Museum of the Polissya Rushnyk.

Cело Рижани на річці Ірша розташоване за 50 кілометрів на північ від Житомира. Адміністративно входить до складу Житомирського району Житомирської області.
В документах уперше згадується в 1501 році під назвами Резань, Грежань, Грижани. В XVI столітті Грижани були центром волості, яка належала литовським магнатам Сапегам. Дерев'яна церква різдва Богородиці зведена у 1900-1914 роках на місці давнішого храму, який перевезли в село Нова Бобриця.

Ryzhany Historical and Local Lore Museum

The Historical and Local Lore Museum of the village of Ryzhany in Zhytomyr region was founded in 1987.
The main museum exhibition in three halls is located in the premises of the Ryzhany Lyceum. In particular, archaeological finds from the nearby village of Kropyvenka, materials about the foundation and development of the village of Ryzhany, historical photos, old land deeds, and household items of Polishuks are presented.
In a separate hall, there is the "Flax Museum", which introduces the process of creating linen cloth and Polishuks embroidery, as well as the history of the local Volodarsk-Volynsky flax factory.
A subdivision of the Museum of History and Local Lore is also the "Museum of the Polishuks Rushnyk", opened in 2015 in the nearby premises of the Ryzhany Club. More than 130 original embroidered linen towels, traditional clothes of the Polishuks, agricultural objects are presented here.
