Until the start of a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine in 2022, the historic center of the city largely preserved the old Art Nouveau buildings. One of these modern buildings houses the Art Museum named after the outstanding artist Arkhip Kuindzhi, who was born in Mariupol (the museum was looted by the occupiers).
The Mariupol water tower, built according to the project of the city architect Viktor Nielsen, was considered a tourist symbol of the city - the Tower Cultural and Tourist Center was located here, an observation deck was available on the upper tier (the current state of the attraction is unknown). The city drama theater, built in Soviet times on the site of the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, became a mass grave for hundreds of Mariupol residents who hid there from air raids after being hit by a Russian aerial bomb. Favorite places for walks of the townspeople were the Theater Square with a flat light-musical fountain and the Pier on the embankment.
The powerful industrial potential of the city consisted of the Mariupol Metallurgical Plant named after Ilyich and the Azovstal Metallurgical Plant, which became the last fortress for the heroes of the city's defense: national guardsmen of the Azov regiment, marines and border guards.
At the same time, the city developed as a climatic and mud resort. Within the limits of the city center and nearby villages there are a dozen equipped beaches, near the city there is a large resort area on the protected Bilosaray spit.
By decree of the President of Ukraine, Mariupol received the honorary title "Hero City of Ukraine", but until now it remains temporarily occupied.
