Bratslav

The historic town of Bratslav is located on the right bank of the South Buh River between Nemyriv and Tulchyn.

Founded in the 14th century, it was first mentioned in connection with the defeat of Tatar troops by the Lithuanian army of Prince Olherd in 1362. On the site of the ancient fortifications, Prince Fedir Koriatovych (Koryatovych) built the Bratslav Castle (not preserved). Dmytro Korybut and Fedir Ostrozky owned the castle at different times. In 1552, the castle was captured and destroyed by the Crimean khan Devlet Girey, but soon the fortress was rebuilt by order of the Polish king Sihismund II August, and in 1569 the city received Magdeburg rights, briefly becoming the center of the Bratslav Voivodeship.

During the Liberation War, Bratslav became a regimental city (Bratslav colonel was the legendary Cossack Danylo Nechai), but during the Ruina, the city returned to Poland, and in 1793 it became part of the Russian Empire.

It was one of the centers of Hasidism - in the years 1802-1810, the tzadik Rabbi Nahman (of Bratslav), the founder of the Breslav movement of Hasidism, lived here, whose grave is in Uman.

During the Second World War, a ghetto was created in the town, which contained Jews from Bratslav and its surroundings (most of them died).

The Catholic church, built in 1865, has been preserved. In 2011, a monument to the field kitchen was erected in honor of its inventor Anton Turchanovych, a native of Bratslav.

Зберігся католицький костел, збудований в 1865 році. В 2011 році встановлено пам'ятник польовій кухні на честь її винахідника Антона Турчановича, уродженця Брацлава.
