Murafa

The village of Murafa on the bank of the river of the same name is located 10 kilometers east of Sharhorod.

It has been known since 1432, when a battle between the Rus-Lithuanian prince Fedir Ostrozki and Polish troops took place nearby. At the end of the 16th century, Prince Mykolay Yazlovetskyi founded the castle and town of Morakhva. The next owners were magnates Belzki, Tyshkevych and Potocki.

At the beginning of the 17th century, Jadwiga of Jazloviec-Belzska invited the Dominican fathers to Murafa, who founded a monastery here and built the church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, which has survived to this day.

At the end of the 18th century, Count Joachim Karol Pototsky made a great contribution to the development of the city. He built a saltpeter plant, established a palace and a park with a menagerie (not preserved), and also reconstructed a monastery. Another architectural landmark is the Ascension Church (1788).

Murafa is considered the birthplace of the legendary basket chieftain of the Zaporizhzhia Nizovy Army, Ivan Sirko, who was born between 1605 and 1610.
