Kysylyn

The historical village of Kysylyn on the Stokhid River is located between Lutsk and Volodymyr, 10 kilometers from the H-22 highway. It is administratively part of the Zaturtsi village hromada of the Volodymyr district of the Volyn region.

Kysilyn was mentioned for the first time in 1451. This is where the noble Kysil family comes from, from which one of the famous figures of Ukrainian history, Adam Kysil, came. His ancestor Ostafii Kysil, who was a Socinian (Arian), founded a Protestant church and an Arian academy here. In 1638-1640, three Socinian congresses were held here, attended by up to three thousand people.

In 1638-1640, three Socinian congresses were held here, attended by up to three thousand people.

After the expulsion of the Socinians in 1644-1662, the Kysylyn Academy came under the ownership of the Order of Carmelites and was transformed into a Catholic monastery with a church (now in ruins). The 18th century St. Michael's Church has also been preserved.

In the first half of the 20th century, in addition to Ukrainians and Poles, several hundred Jews who maintained a synagogue lived in the town of Kysilyn. Almost all of them were executed by the Nazis during World War II. A memorial has been created at the site of the mass burial.
