Zhydachiv

The city of Zhydachiv is located on the Uzhhorod-Ternopil road between Stryi and Rohatyn.

It was first mentioned in 1164 as Udech (Zudechiv), later it changed names several times. In 1393, the city of Zhydachiv received Magdeburg rights. A castle was built on the ancient Rus hillfort (ramparts have been preserved). The city was a great center of salt trade, agriculture and handicrafts. The first wooden church was founded in 1301, and 300 years later it was rebuilt in stone.

In 1676, a decisive battle between the army of the Polish king Jan Sobeski and the Turkish troops of Ibrahim Shaitan took place near Zhydachiv, as a result of which a peace treaty was concluded between the Poles and the Turks.

The development of the city in Soviet times is connected with the opening of the Zhydachiv Pulp and Paper Plant.

The old stables on the territory of the local vocational school, the old Polish cemetery have been preserved.
