The young industrial city of Siverskodonetsk is located on the banks of the Siverskyi Donets River, 100 km northeast of Luhansk. It borders Lysychansk across the river.
It was founded as the village of Lishimstroy in 1934 by a group of chemical engineers who came to build a nitrogen-fat plant. In 1950, the city was named Sievierodonetsk. In 2024, by the decision of the National Commission for State Language Standards, the city was included in the list of settlements whose names do not correspond to the lexical norms of the Ukrainian language and imitate Russian. In 2024, the city of Sievierodonetsk was renamed to Siverskodonetsk.
