General information about Berehove

The border town of Berehove on the Virke Canal, which connects the Borzhava and Latoritsa rivers, is considered the "most Hungarian" in Ukraine.

According to legend, in the distant past, a Sas shepherd found a treasure on the site of the current Exaltation Church in a pit dug by the hooves of fighting bulls and built a temple on this site, and a city around it.

In the era of the Roman Empire, there was probably a border settlement of Romans here, and in the 11th century, the Hungarian feudal lord Lampert strengthened his position, and King Geiza II moved the Saxons (Saxons) here. Old names: Lamperthaza, Berehsas.

In the 17th century, the city was owned by the Transylvanian prince Gabor Bethlen (the "Count's Court" palace has been preserved, in which a historical museum has been opened). Bethlen played a major role in the Thirty Years' War against the Habsburgs, for a time he was king of Hungary. Since 1728, the city passed into the ownership of the Shenborn counts, who remained the owners of the region until the beginning of the 20th century.

The city has long been a center of winemaking, many wine cellars have been preserved, some of which are being used again for their intended purpose (the wine festival is held on March 15). Berehove is also famous for the springs of thermal mineral water, on the basis of which an outdoor swimming pool operates.

Many architectural monuments have been preserved, although many of them are in poor condition. The majority of the population is Hungarians: there are many monuments to Hungarian figures of history and culture, the Hungarian language prevails on the streets. Central European time is considered local time.

Thanks to its rich history, special atmosphere, as well as a wide selection of hotels, motels and restaurants, Berehove is developing as a tourist center and is a convenient transshipment base for trips to Hungary.

Day of the city of Berehove is celebrated on the penultimate weekend of May.

Tasting Hall "Old Wine Cellar"

Winery / brewery

The old wine cellar in Berehove, over 300 years old, is being used for its intended purpose again thanks to a family of enthusiasts for the revival of Berehove winemaking: Oleh and Tetyana Havrilchenko.

According to legend, the wine cellar was carved out of the rock by hand by captured Turks. The restored cellar is one of the few preserved in Berehove from the 17th century.

According to traditional technologies, vintage wines are produced here from local grape varieties of the Berehove grape region. The most difficult to produce are Bianca and Traminer, but Riesling, Merlot and Zweilgate have an equally interesting taste. Muller-Thurgau wine is considered the pearl of the Old Wine Cellar collection.

The elegant building of the casino "Zolota Pava" in the center of Berehove was built in the 19th century on the initiative of the sub-county Tomash Etvesh.

Local bohemians, well-known and respected residents of the city gathered here, solemn events took place - balls, representatives of the elite and public cultural organizations of Berehove met here. Many famous artists of the world were hosted in the institution, musical evenings were held - the operetta star Anna Bati, the operetta and cinema star Shari Fedak, the pianist Beyla Bortok performed in the Zolota pava Casino, the visitors of the institution were the Hungarian Count Ishtvan Secheni, writers Ferents Mora and Zhyhmond Morits.

In 1912, the institution was rebuilt and updated. It was then that wood-carved peacocks and frescoes on the walls in the style of the Czech-Moravian painter Alfons Mucha appeared.

After the Second World War, the restaurant "Karpaty" was opened in the premises. In the 1980s, the building was restored, and in 2003 the restaurant was renamed the "Zolota pava" hotel-restaurant complex.

Today it is a respectable establishment with luxurious interiors that preserve the aristocratic spirit of pre-war Transcarpathia. The entrance from the ceiling of the hall is illuminated by a fresco with the image of a woman "Morning Star", on the walls in the hall are depicted luxurious nymphs, each of which is associated with a season and time of day.

Restaurant "Zolota Pava" offers the best dishes of Transcarpathian, Hungarian and Ukrainian cuisine.
