The Bulgakov Museum in Kyiv will not be closed

The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance will not insist on the closure of the Mikhail Bulgakov Literary Memorial Museum, but the institution must change its name. This opinion was expressed by the head of the National Union of Ukraine Anton Drobovych on the air of "Radio Kultura".

Drobovych spoke about the fate of the museum in the context of the decision of the UINP experts to recognize the Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov as a Ukrainophobe and a Russian emperor. According to the decision of the expert commission, the use of Bulgakov's name in the names of geographical objects and legal entities, the presence of monuments and memorial signs erected in his honor in public space are propaganda of Russian imperial policy.

"They will be forced by law to change the name, but no one forbids them to continue talking about Bulgakov's work. But to tell the whole truth, because the museum has a unique collection. And there is a lot to tell. So that all these delegations know that the only place where they will tell the whole truth about Bulgakov is Kyiv. Come and see," explained Drobovych.

He emphasized that he does not support the closing of the museum because its existence gives Ukraine an opportunity to express its view on Bulgakov's legacy and personality.

"The fact that we close the Bulgakov museum in Kyiv will not make him disappear from the world. He is a powerful, talented author. And it happens that not very good people become powerful, talented authors. If we want to fight for the fact that Ukrainians form meanings... we cannot fold quotes and throw it out of our discourse, and then be offended that we cannot influence anything. I would recommend having a voice in this global discussion," Drobovych concluded.

He noted that he considers the conclusion of the UINP experts to be "a bit emotional", but admits that "they called a spade a spade".

Український інститут національної пам'яті не наполягатиме на закритті Літературно-меморіального музею Михайла Булгакова, але інституція мусить змінити назву. Таку думку висловив голова УІНП Антон Дробович в етері "Радіо Культура".

Про долю музею Дробович говорив у контексті рішення експертів УІНП про визнання російського письменника Михайла Булгакова українофобом та російським імперцем. Згідно з рішенням експертної комісії, використання імені Булгакова у назвах географічних об’єктів та юридичних осіб, перебування у публічному просторі встановлених на його честь пам’ятників, пам’ятних знаків є пропагандою російської імперської політики.

"Вони за законом будуть змушені змінити назву, але ніхто не забороняє їм далі розповідати про творчість Булгакова. Але розказувати всю правду, бо музей має унікальну колекцію. І там дуже багато можна розповісти. Щоб всі ці делегації знали, що єдине місце, де розкажуть всю правду про Булгакова – це Київ. Приїжджайте, дивіться", – пояснив Дробович.

Він підкреслив, що не підтримує закриття музею через те, що його існування дає можливість Україні висловити свій погляд на спадщину та особистість Булгакова.

"Від того, що ми закриємо музей Булгакова в Києві, він не зникне в світі. Це потужний, талановитий автор. І таке буває, що стають не дуже хороші люди потужними, талановитими авторами. Якщо ми хочемо боротись за те, що українці формують смисли... ми не можемо скласти лапки і викинути його з нашого дискурсу, а потім ображатися, що не можемо ні на що вплинути. Я би рекомендував мати голос у цій світовій дискусії", – підсумував Дробович.

Він зазначив, що вважає висновок експертів УІНП "трохи емоційним", але визнає, що "вони назвали речі своїми іменами".
