The founders call their paleontological collection the largest in the region, and the first find was a mammoth bone from the bottom of the Seim River.

The first paleontological museum in the Sumy region has opened on the basis of the Center for Ecological and Naturalistic Creativity of Schoolchildren of the Sumy City Council. It was created by searchers and researchers Vladyslav Vertel and Denys Hryhoriev, reports the online publication "Tsukr".

The impetus for the creation of the museum was a find made by scuba diving instructor Denys Hryhoriev in 2016 during diving training on the Seim River.

"The first and largest find – a mammoth femur – introduced Denys through mutual acquaintances to Vladyslav Vertel, who is an expert in paleontology and biology, is engaged in scientific and teaching activities. From time to time, the comrades went on search expeditions to different parts of Ukraine and found paleontological finds. And later they decided to open such a museum," the publication writes.

The co-founders made the showcases and design of the material and technical base at their own expense. Now they continue to replenish the museum with their own finds and purchased exhibits.

According to Denys Hryhoriev, the museum stores the largest collections of fossil invertebrates of the Late Cretaceous and Paleogene in the region. The total number of exhibits exceeds 700 units. Therefore, the founders call their paleontological fund the largest in the region.

"Перша і найбільша знахідка – стегнова кістка мамонта – познайомила Дениса через спільних знайомих із Владиславом Вертелем, який є експертом у палеонтології та біології, займається науковою і викладацькою діяльністю. Час від часу товариші їздили в пошукові експедиції в різні частини України й робили палеонтологічні знахідки. І згодом вирішили відкрити такий музей", – пише видання.

Вітрини й оформлення матеріально-технічної бази співзасновники зробили власним коштом. Зараз продовжують поповнювати музей власними знахідками й придбаними експонатами.

За словами Дениса Григор'єва, в музеї зберігаються найбільші в області колекції викопних безхребетних тварин пізньої крейди та палеогену. Загальна кількість експонатів перевищує 700 одиниць. Тож засновники називають їхній палеонтологічний фонд найбільшим в області.
