The central figure of the memorial in honor of the Ukrainian defenders who died in the battles against the Russian occupiers was the monument to the Hero of Ukraine Oleksandr Matsievsky.

The first memorial complex in Ukraine in honor of heroes-defenders of Ukraine was solemnly opened in the center of Nizhyn city. This was reported by the press service of the Nizhyn City Council.

The memorial complex was built in the form of a Cossack cross. The central element of the composition is a monument to the Hero of Ukraine Oleksandr Matsievsky, a soldier of the Nizhyn Battalion of the Chernihiv Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, who was captured in December 2022. The Russians shot him after saying: "Glory to Ukraine!

"The whole world saw the face of Russian fascism during the execution of the hero of Nizhyn. He became the personification of the heroism of all Ukrainians. There is an electronic information stand near the Memorial, where you can read the biographical data of each fallen Defender from Nizhyn. Unfortunately, we have 158 dead on the interactive scoreboard heroes," the message says.

The initiative to build the memorial belongs to the analytical center "Ukrainian Institute of the Future". An experienced team of specialists worked on the memorial under the leadership of architect Zhanna Balanyuk and sculptor Serhiy Oleksienko. The complex was built with charitable funds.

Перший в Україні меморіальний комплекс на честь героїв-захисників України урочисто відкрили в центрі міста Ніжин. Про це повідомляє пресслужба Ніжинської міської ради.

Меморіальний комплекс збудовано у вигляді Козацького хреста. Центральним елементом композиції є пам'ятник Герою України Олександру Мацієвському, воїну Ніжинського батальйону Чернігівської бригади Сил ТрО ЗСУ, який потрапив у полон у грудні 2022 року. Росіяни розстріляли його після слів: "Слава Україні!

"Увесь світ побачив обличчя російського фашизму під час розстрілу ніжинського героя. Саме він став уособленням героїзму всіх українців. Поруч з Меморіалом є електронний інформаційний стенд, де можна ознайомитись з біографічними даними кожного загиблого Захисника з Ніжина. На жаль, на інтерактивному табло маємо 158 загиблих героїв", – йдеться у повідомленні. 

Ініціатива побудови меморіалу належить аналітичному центру "Український інститут майбутнього". Над меморіалом працювала досвідчена команда фахівців під керівництвом архітектора Жанни Баланюк та скульптора Сергія Олексієнка. Комплекс збудовано за благодійні кошти.
