Stone babas from Novomykolaivka saved from Russian shelling

The operation to rescue the exhibits of the Novomykolaivka local history museum was carried out by soldiers of the 128th separate heavy mechanized brigade "Dyke Pole" in the Zaporizhia region. In particular, the 12th-century stone babas, who were under threat from Russian KABs, were evacuated.

According to the brigade's official Facebook page, the evacuation was initiated by professional historian and military serviceman Dmytro Kayuk. He learned from his former student that the exhibits of the local history museum of Novomykolaivka have not yet been taken out, although Russian KABs have already destroyed several buildings near the museum.

"I turned to the brigade commander and he gave permission to save the stone women, and even allocated equipment," said Dmytro Kayuk.

The operation was joined by the well-known Zaporizhzhia historian Petro Boiko, because the exhibits had to be transferred in compliance with all the rules for accepting historical values.

"We had to work hard with shovels to dig up these babas. One was very large," added Dmytro Kayuk.

In addition to the stone babas, the military also managed to evacuate the most valuable paintings and historical finds from the museum exhibition. Now the exhibits have been transferred to one of the cultural institutions away from the front, where they will be stored for the duration of the war.

Операцію з порятунку експонатів Новомиколаївського історико-краєзнавчого музею здійснили воїни 128 окремої важкої механізованої бригади "Дике Поле" в Запорізькій області. Зокрема евакуювали кам’яних баб XII століття, які опинилися під загрозою ударів російських КАБів.

Як повідомляє офіційна Facebook-сторінка бригади, евакуацію ініціював фаховий історик і військовослужбовець Дмитро Каюк. Від своєї колишньої студентки він дізнався, що експонати історико-краєзнавчого музею Новомиколаївки досі не вивезені, хоча поруч із музеєм російські КАБи вже зруйнували кілька будівель.

"Я звернувся до командира бригади – і він дав дозвіл на порятунок кам’яних баб, навіть виділив техніку", – розповів Дмитро Каюк.

До операції долучився відомий запорізький історик Петро Бойко, адже експонати потрібно було передати з дотриманням усіх правил приймання історичних цінностей.

"Нам добряче довелося попрацювати лопатами, щоб відкопати цих баб. Одна була дуже великою", – додав Дмитро Каюк.

Окрім кам’яних баб, військовим також вдалося евакуювати найцінніші картини та історичні знахідки з музейної експозиції. Нині експонати передали до одного з культурних закладів подалі від фронту, де вони зберігатимуться на період війни.
