The National Union of Writers of Ukraine considers it unacceptable to have a museum in the capital dedicated to a Russian writer who "hated Ukraine and slandered it in his works."
The closure of the museum of Russian writer Mikhail Bulhakov and the creation of a museum of the outstanding Ukrainian composer Oleksandr Koshyts in its place is initiated by the National Union of Writers of Ukraine. The relevant proposals are contained in a statement by the Secretariat of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine, published on the official website of the union.
The authors of the statement call Bulgakov a writer who "fiercely hated Ukraine and its independence, and also slandered it as much as he could in his works," citing, for example, the anti-Ukrainian statements of the heroes of the novel "The White Guard."
"Our proposal is clear: close the Bulhakov Museum; transfer all museum exhibits for archival storage to the National Museum of Literature; in the premises where the Bulhakov Museum was located, create a museum of the outstanding Ukrainian composer Oleksandr Koshits, who lived in this building until 1906 and whose merits as a Ukrainian cultural figure are very significant not only for Ukraine, but also for the whole world," the statement said.
The union is convinced that the Bulhakov Museum has no place in Ukraine, because the presence of this writer in the Ukrainian cultural space conceals a danger not only for Ukrainians as a nation, but also for Ukrainian identity and statehood.
As travels.in.ua reported, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance does not insist on closing the Mikhail Bulhakov Literary and Memorial Museum, but the institution is proposing that it should change its name.
