The legendary Zaporozhian Oak tree has lost its last living branch

In Zaporizhzhia, the last living branch of the legendary 700-year-old Zaporozhian Oak tree on Verkhnia Khortytsia has fallen. Anna Holovko, an employee of the Khortytsia National Reserve, reported this on her Facebook page.

According to her, recently the monument and the area around it have been in unsatisfactory condition. At the same time, she emphasized the importance of preserving cultural and historical values.

"We can't let the Zaporozhian Oak tree disappear, can we? The monument can turn into a monument. Preserve fragmentary wood that can be stabilized. And there are already strong young oaks around. And history will continue to live for future generations," wrote Anna Holovko.

According to the director of the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Zaporizhzhia City Council, Oleksii Maksymenko, the last branch of the Zaporozhian Oak has been in unsatisfactory condition for a long time due to its age. Despite this, the tree has not been officially declared dead. A visiting commission is scheduled to be held on Friday to inspect the plant and determine the consequences.

"We will be able to state that the tree has finally died only after a commission examination. Scientists and specialists from the environmental service will be included. This commission will be held on Friday, specialists will inspect, determine further actions and the current state of the tree. All the consequences of what happened to it and so on will be determined right on the location," the official said in a comment to Suspilne.

The Zaporozhian Oak is a 700-year-old tree 36 meters high, but its age may be several hundred years older. The plant is considered a remnant of the original Dnieper forests.

У Запоріжжі впала остання жива гілка легендарного 700-річного Запорозького дуба на Верхній Хортиці. Про це повідомила співробітниця Національного заповідника "Хортиця" Анна Головко на власній сторінці у Facebook.

За її словами, останнім часом пам'ятка і територія навколо неї перебували у незадовільному стані. При цьому вона наголосила на важливості збереження культурних та історичних цінностей.

"Ми ж не можемо дозволили Запорозькому дубу зникнути? Пам'ятка може перетворитися в пам'ятник. Зберегти фрагментарно деревину, яку можна стабілізувати. А навколо вже міцні молоді дуби. І історія буде продовжувати жити для наступних поколінь", – написала Анна Головко.

За словами директору департаменту культури та туризму Запорізької міської ради Олексія Максименка, остання гілка Запорозького дуба тривалий час була мала незадовільний стан через власний вік. Попри це офіційно загибель дерева не констатували. У п'ятницю має відбутися виїзна комісія, аби оглянути рослину та визначити наслідки.

"Констатувати, що дерево остаточно вмерло, ми зможемо сказати тільки після комісійного обстеження. Туди увійдуть і науковці, і спеціалісти екологічної служби. Це в п'ятницю вже буде ця комісія, спеціалісти будуть оглядати, визначати подальші дії та стан дерева на зараз. Прямо на локації будуть визначати всі наслідки, що з ним сталося і так далі", – повідомив посадовець у коментарі "Суспільному".

Запорозький дуб – 700-річне дерево висотою 36 метрів, втім його вік може бути більшим на декілька сотень років. Рослину вважають залишком первісних придніпровських лісів.
