Andriy Tychyna: more than half of Ukrainian museums are inaccessible to visitors with limited mobility

The project "Inclusive Travels in Ukraine: accessibility of museums of Ukraine" with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Fund is in the final stage of implementation. This was announced by project co-author Andrii Tychyna during a round table on the accessibility of museum spaces, organized by the Ternopil Castles National Reserve.

According to Tychyna, today the project has detailed information about the conditions of accessibility of about 400 museums in all regions of Ukraine. It was collected with the help of an accessibility questionnaire specially developed by project experts Volodymyr Vysotskyi and Maria Nikitina.

"We have about 1,500 museum contacts in our database. At the first stage, we sent letters to all of their known e-mail addresses with a presentation of the project and a request to fill out an availability questionnaire, and also conducted a telephone survey with those whom we were able to call. Unfortunately, the feedback communication was not everywhere as active as we would have liked. Therefore, at the second stage, volunteers in the regions helped us to collect information. And now the stage of expert monitoring in the most important museums is underway, based on the results of which professional reports are being prepared," Tychyna said.
Commenting on the results of the monitoring, the co-author of the project emphasized that today more than half of museums in Ukraine are physically inaccessible to visitors with reduced mobility, as they have stairs in front of the entrance that are not duplicated by a ramp. About 60% of museums have indoor stairs, while only 8% of them are equipped with an elevator, lift or internal ramp. Only a quarter of museums use indoor navigation signs. And only 10% of institutions have an inclusive restroom.

"This is only a small part of the accessibility parameters that should be taken into account for any public space, museums in particular. We have more than a hundred such criteria. Some are obvious, some may be a revelation for someone. And our accessibility evaluation questionnaire will help each museum understand this," – Tychyna emphasized.

According to him, the information collected by the project about the conditions of accessibility of museums with the possibility of sorting by various parameters will be presented in the near future on the website travels.in.ua, which is currently being developed by IT specialists.

Проєкт "Inclusive Travels in Ukraine: доступність музеїв України" за підтримки Українського культурного фонду перебуває у завершальній стадії реалізації. Про це повідомив співавтор проєкту Андрій Тичина під час круглого столу з питань доступності музейних просторів, організованого Національним заповідником "Замки Тернопілля".

За словами Тичини, на сьогодні проєкт має деталізовану інформацію про умови доступності близько 400 музеїв у всіх регіонах України. Її зібрали за допомогою анкети доступності, спеціально розробленої експертами проєкту Володимиром Висоцьким та Марією Нікітіною.

"В нашій базі близько 1500 контактів музеїв. На першому етапі ми розіслали на всі відомі нам їх електронні адреси листи з презентацією проєкту та проханням заповнити анкету доступності, а також провели телефонне опитування з тими, до кого змогли додзвонитися. На жаль, зворотній зв'язок не скрізь був таким активним, як нам хотілося б. Тому на другому етапі нам допомагали збирати інформацію волонтери в регіонах. А зараз триває етап експертного моніторингу у найважливіших музеях, за підсумками якого готуються фахові звіти", – розповів Тичина.

Коментуючи результати моніторингу, співавтор проєкту наголосив, що на сьогодні більше половини музеїв України є фізично недоступними для маломобільних відвідувачів, оскільки мають перед входом сходи, що не продубльовані пандусом. Близько 60% музеїв мають сходи у приміщеннях, при тому що тільки 8% з них обладнані ліфтом, підйомником чи внутрішнім пандусом. Навігаційні вказівники у приміщеннях використовують лише чверть музеїв. І лише 10% закладів мають інклюзивну вбиральню.

"Це лише маленька частина параметрів доступності, які варто враховувати будь-якому громадському простору, зокрема музеям. Таких критеріїв у нас більше сотні. Деякі очевидні, деякі можуть стати для когось відкриттям. І зрозуміти кожному музею це допоможе наша анкета оцінки доступності", – наголосив Тичина.

За його словами, зібрана проєктом інформація про умови доступності музеїв з можливістю сортування за різними параметрами вже найближчим часом буде представлена на сайті travels.in.ua, що зараз розробляється IT-фахівцями.
