A large program of museum events in the Lviv region is developed with emphasis on overcoming social isolation, improving mental health, promoting inclusiveness, as well as deepening knowledge about Ukrainian history and identity, when our heritage is under threat of destruction.

33 museums of the Lviv region will take part in this year's campaign for the International Museum Day. As the press service of the Lviv City Council reports, the special museum program for May 18-21 includes unusual excursions, master classes and exclusive exhibitions.

In particular, the Lviv Museum of the History of Religion has planned a brass band performance on Museum Square on Thursday at 12:00 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in this museum, you can listen to a concert of organ music, and at 4:00 p.m. you can visit the costumed excursion of the dungeons of the Dominican monastery "Love Through the Ages".

The Museum of Folk Architecture and Life in Lviv named after Klementiy Sheptytskyi is holding a Fair of modern embroidery brands during the weekend. And on Saturday at 19:00 offers a unique opportunity to go on an evening tour of the open-air museum, during which you will have the opportunity to see in a different light one of the largest collections of objects of sacred wooden architecture in Europe.

A large program for each of the four days was prepared by the Franko House. Among the most interesting events are the presentation of the embroidery exhibition by Tamara Dzindra, the philosophical breakfast "From values to action", the lyrical poetic and musical evening "If we met again..." and several theatricalized excursions for children and adults.

On Thursday at 4:00 p.m., there will be a unique opportunity to visit the Dungeon of the Garrison Holy Apostles Peter and Paul Church with the tour "Restoring the Heritage of Centuries" accompanied by restaurateurs with a visit to the restoration workshop. And the Ivan Franko LNU Zoological Museum offers a marathon of "Night at the Museum" excursions on Saturday from 5:00 p.m.

Parents can choose master classes and quests for children or the whole family, for example, the "Archaeological Expedition" master class from the "Ancient Zvenyhorod" Museum or a quest around Naukova Street from the City Museum. There are also activities in museums outside the city (Dzindra museum in Bryukhovychy, "Ancient Zvenigorod" museum in Zvenigorod, Zhovkivskyi, Olskyi, Zolochivskyi, Pidhoretskyi castles). This year, new museums joined the program, such as the "Museum in the Dark" and the Sound History Museum with retro exhibits of audio, video, and radio equipment.

The theme of International Museum Day 2023, announced by the International Association of Museums and Professional Museum Workers, is "Museums, Sustainability and Well-being". According to the head of the Lviv City Council's tourism department, Khrystyna Lebed, it is said that museums can contribute to positive changes in society - overcoming social isolation, improving mental health, promoting inclusiveness and supporting climate measures.

"Now it is difficult for Ukraine to talk about sustainable development and well-being in the conditions of war. But we consulted with museums and decided to emphasize the importance of visiting museums for emotional restoration and preservation of psychological stability, for reducing social barriers and improving inclusiveness, for deepening knowledge about Ukrainian identity, memory and history, when our heritage is under threat of destruction," said the head of the city's tourism department.

On May 18, 19 museums of the Lviv region offer visitors free entry. Most events require pre-registration by phone or online. The full program can be found at the link.
