The Kyiv-Mohyla Academy was founded in 1632 on the basis of the Kyiv Brotherhood School. In 1615, the Kyiv Epiphany Brotherhood founded the Brotherhood Monastery with an Orthodox school, which was the first higher educational institution in Eastern Europe. On the initiative of Metropolitan Petro Mohyla, the college acquired the status of an academy and in 1701 was named after him.

The old academy building was built in 1703 under Hetman Ivan Mazepa, the baroque dome of the Annunciation Church was added later, the New Building was built in 1819, and at the beginning of the 20th century they were connected by the arc-shaped Central Building, which faces Kontraktova Square.

In 1991, the academy was revived as the National University "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy", one of the most prestigious higher educational institutions in Ukraine.

In the square opposite the academy there is a monument to the poet and philosopher Hryhoriy Skovoroda (1976), who studied and taught at the academy. In the courtyard there is a sundial (1826). The NaUKMA cultural center houses an Art Gallery.

В сквері навпроти академії - пам'ятник поету та філософу Григорію Сковороді (1976 рік), який навчався та викладав в академії. У дворі - сонячний годинник (1826 рік). При культурному центрі НаУКМА діє Галерея мистецтв.
