Основоположник українського професійного театру Іван Карпенко-Карий помер 2 (15) вересня 1907 року після тяжкої хвороби у Берліні, куди їздив на лікування. Згодом його тіло перевезли на батьківщину та поховали на Карлюжинському кладовищі поруч з іншими членами родини.

Надгробок з барельєфним портретом Карпенка-Карого встановлений на могилі в 1958 році. Пам'ятка історії України національного значення.
