Monastyrskyi Island is the historical core of the Dnipro River, a favorite recreation spot of the townspeople. A pedestrian bridge across a branch of the Dnipro River was thrown from Taras Shevchenko Park to the island.
According to legend, in the 11th century there was a Byzantine monastery here, where Princess Olha stayed on the stormy road to Constantinople. A memorial cross was erected in honor of the Byzantine monks, the Nicholas Church was built on the cape (1999).
During Soviet times, a monument to Taras Shevchenko was erected on Monastyrskyi Island, a zoo and aquarium were opened, as well as a children's amusement park.
