The Vovchansk Museum of Local Lore is one of the oldest museums in the Kharkiv region. The museum was established in 1912 on the initiative of the archaeologist, tireless collector of local history materials and antiquities, and discoverer of Saltiv archaeological culture Vasyl Babenko in a specially built building in the Art Nouveau style.
In 1941, during the bombing of the city of Vovchansk, the museum was damaged. In 1963, a new museum of local history was created based on its surviving collections.
The museum's exposition introduces the history of the city and the stages of development of Vovchansk. The collection includes traditional examples of folk art for the region - embroidery, wood carvings, paintings, as well as objects of folk life.
The archeology department presents monuments of Saltiv archaeological culture.
Russian-Ukrainian War
According to the information of the Vovchansk City Military Administration, as of the end of 2024, the city of Volchansk has been practically destroyed by the Russian occupiers. The museum collection has been evacuated to a safe place in advance.
