Horyanska Rotunda

Temple , Architecture

The Horyanska Rotunda (Church of Saint Anna) in Uzhhorod is the oldest temple in Transcarpathia, a unique monument of Romano-Byzantine architecture, in which experts see features of Great Moravian architecture.

The most probable time of construction is considered to be the 13th century, but there are also earlier datings - up to the 10th century. The rotunda temple in Horyany is made in the shape of a hexagon with powerful walls 2-2.5 meters thick and narrow windows, made of bricks similar to the ancient Rus plinth. Probably, the church of Saint  Anna was the chapel of the fortified castle and performed defensive functions.

According to legend, the Horyanska Rotunda was built by Princess Gragissa, who owned the Horyansky Castle in the 13th century. When the castle was captured by the tycoon Matush Chuck Trenchynsky, escaping from dishonor, Gragissa went forever to the castle dungeons, where her soul still awaits release.

In the 15th century, the nave of the Nicholas Church was attached to the rotunda.

The frescoes created in 1360-1370 by Italian masters of the Giotto school have been preserved inside the Horyanska Rotunda. On the eastern wall of the nave there are paintings of the 15th century, executed in the "sal secco" technique in the manner of the Tyrolean and Czech schools of painting.

Khust Castle

Castle / fortress

The ruins of the medieval Khust Castle can be seen on the Castle Hill near the center of Khust.

The castle was built in the 11th-12th centuries to control the "salt road" from Solotvyno. The legend connects the name with a voivode named Khust. The castle on the top of a 150-meter mountain stood out for its power, which was provided by 14-meter walls, high towers and a siege well.

In 1378, the Hungarian king presented the Khust castle to cousins Balko and Drago from the Moldavian family of Drahosh. Legend connects them with the Wallachian lord Vlad III Tsepesh (Drakula), who became the prototype of the hero of Bram Stoker's popular novel.

After 1526, the Khust Castle passed to the Principality of Transylvania, and was one of the strongholds of the rebels during the Hungarian War of Independence. It existed until 1776, when a powder cellar exploded due to a lightning strike. Since then, it has not recovered.

Access is free.

Narcissus Valley

Natural object , UNESCO world heritage site

The legendary Narcissus Valley is located in the Kireshi tract between the Tysa and Khustets rivers on the outskirts of Khust.

The nature of this relict valley has been preserved since the Ice Age. The narrow-leaved narcissus population growing here is unique in that it is not in the mountains, but on the plain (180-200 meters above sea level). Similar thickets, but of a smaller area, remained in a few places - the Alps, mountainous regions of Romania and some Balkan countries.

There is an adapted legend about the ancient Greek god Narcissus, who allegedly saw his reflection in the mirror waters of Khustets, fell in love and died of longing, turning into a flower.

Protection of the valley began during the times of Austria-Hungary. Under the Soviet government, they wanted to plow the land, reclamation work began, but thanks to the efforts of Professor Vasyl Komendar, the territory ended up under the protection of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve.

The mass flowering of Narcissus Valley usually begins in the first half of May and lasts about two weeks (the exact date depends on the weather). The earth is covered with a white flower carpet of unusual beauty, which thousands of tourists come to see.

There is an ecological and educational center "Narcissus Museum", which tells about the unique flora and fauna of the valley, the history of its preservation.

Nevytsky Castle

Castle / fortress

The Romanesque-Gothic Nevytsky Castle on the top of a hill above the Uzh River valley was built in the 13th century, probably on the site of an earlier wooden fortification.

For the first time Nevytsky Castle is mentioned in 1274 as the royal castle of Unh County. He controlled the trade route to the Uzhotsky Pass. Until 1321, it was a stronghold of Transcarpathian feudal lords who rebelled against the new king Karl I Robert. Later, for three centuries, the Nevytsky Castle was owned by the Drugets Counts, who rebuilt the castle on the Italian model.

The legend tells about one of the mistresses from the Druget family, nicknamed the "Pagan girl" (evil maiden) for her extreme cruelty, who had to be personally punished by the Hungarian king Matthias for her atrocities.

The castle was destroyed by the Transylvanian prince Dyerde (Yuriy) I Rakotsi in 1644 during the religious wars with Austria (Drugets were Catholics, and Rakotsi were Protestant-Calvinists). A square tower-donjon, four corner towers and an overgate tower, fragments of defensive walls, ramparts and a moat have been preserved. There is a siege well with a diameter of 3.5 meters in the castle yard.

Currently, the ruins of Nevytsky Castle are located on the territory of the "Verkhovyna" camp. The castle has been partially restored and conserved, access is free.

Palanok Castle (Mukachevo Historical Museum)

Castle / fortress , Architecture , Museum / gallery

Mukachevo Castle "Palanok" is an outstanding historical and architectural landmark, the ancestral nest of the Transylvanian princes Rakotsi.

The castle was built on a high volcanic mountain (65 meters) in several stages. In the 11th century, by order of King Laszlo I, a stone tower-donjon was built on the site of the ancient Rus wooden fortifications, in 1321, by the will of King Karl Robert, Italian masters expanded the fortress, in 1394, Prince Fedir Koratovych, exiled from Podillya, took up the reconstruction ), and the fortress acquired its current appearance in the 17th century under Dyerd I Rakotsi.

Mukachevo Castle controlled the trade routes through the Veretsky Pass connecting the Middle Danube Valley with Eastern Europe. The outer lines of defense included a moat, a rampart, and a stockade (palanok), which gave the entire castle its name. A bridge across a dry moat led to the Lower Castle, a square for celebrations was provided in the Middle Castle, and princely chambers and a siege well (86 meters) were located in the Upper Castle.

The castle withstood many sieges. The most famous defense in 1685-1688 was led by Ilona Zrini, the widow of Ferents Rakotsi. For three years, she repelled the attacks of the Austrians, who were able to force the garrison to surrender only by trickery. For a long time, the castle was a stronghold of the Hungarian national liberation struggle under the leadership of her son Ferents II Rakotsi. Monuments were erected to both of them.

Under the Austrians, a prison for political prisoners was located here, and under the Soviet authorities - various institutions.

Since 1993, the premises of the Mukachevo Castle have been occupied by a historical museum and an art gallery. You can relax and have a snack in a cozy cafe. A wine tasting room of the "Chizay" trademark has been opened in the castle cellars.

Sakura Alley

Historic area , Park / garden

The oldest sakura alley in Uzhhorod stretches along Brashchaykiv Street from Pushkina Square on Nezalezhnosti Embankment to the intersection with Ferentsa Rakotsi Street. This is the most popular tourist location in the city during the cherry blossoms in the second half of April.

Sakura is recognized as a tourist card of Uzhhorod. The ornamental Japanese cherry was brought here in 1923 from Vienna, and now it grows all over the city. But the first sakura alley was planted along Braschaykiv Street and on the adjacent streets - in the so-called Czech quarters, which were built in the 1920s in the style of interwar modernism. In the spring, hundreds of sakura trees bloom here in an incredibly lush pink and white color. This fascinating sight attracts thousands of tourists to Uzhhorod every year.

New sakura alleys in Uzhhorod were planted in 2009-2011 on the opposite bank of the Uzh River, on the Slovyanska, Kyivska and Pravoslavna embankments.

Almost at the same time as cherry blossoms, magnolias bloom, flowers of Japanese quince and Nedzvetskyi, Florida and Chinese apple trees bloom.

Tasting Hall "Old Wine Cellar"

Winery / brewery

The old wine cellar in Berehove, over 300 years old, is being used for its intended purpose again thanks to a family of enthusiasts for the revival of Berehove winemaking: Oleh and Tetyana Havrilchenko.

According to legend, the wine cellar was carved out of the rock by hand by captured Turks. The restored cellar is one of the few preserved in Berehove from the 17th century.

According to traditional technologies, vintage wines are produced here from local grape varieties of the Berehove grape region. The most difficult to produce are Bianca and Traminer, but Riesling, Merlot and Zweilgate have an equally interesting taste. Muller-Thurgau wine is considered the pearl of the Old Wine Cellar collection.

Town Hall

Architecture

The building of the Town Hall in Mukachevo has been serving its purpose for more than 100 years - now it houses the city council.

It was built according to the project of the Budapest architect Yanosh Bobul, Jr. When the first stone was laid in the foundation of the main clock tower, a letter was placed in which, in particular, it was reported that 14,416 people lived in the city, there were 1,553 houses.

The main portal is decorated with chimes installed by the master Yosyp Shovinsky. The main mechanism is located in a small oval room in the tower. A system of gears and levers connected by cables with two bells under the roof of the dome works in a glass box. Every 15 minutes, a hammer strikes the smaller bell, striking the quarter hours. Strikes on the big bell announce the hours. Thus, within the hearing range of the bells, the time could be determined by ear.

Kankiv Castle (Uhochanskyi)

Castle / fortress

The ruins of the medieval castle of Kankiv are located on the slope of the hill in the western part of Vynohradiv.

In the 10th century, there was a Slavic settlement of Kanko at this place, which was called Uhocha by the Hungarians. In the 12th century, the Hungarian king Heyzo II made Uhocha the center of a separate county. After the Mongol-Tatar invasion, the stone Ugochan castle was rebuilt, which guarded the Transcarpathian salt route. In 1317, the castle of Kankiv, then belonging to the rebellious feudal lord Beke Barshi, was destroyed by the troops of King Karl I Robert.

Soon the king declared Sevlush a royal city and built a new castle in 1329, which then passed to Baron Peter Pereni. The baron soon moved to the palace, and gave the Ugochan castle to Catholic Franciscan monks, who built a church and turned the fortress into a monastery-hospital. In 1556, the Franciscans were expelled by Protestants, and two years later the castle was destroyed by Austrian troops and has not been restored since then.

Picturesque ruins have been preserved, from which a wonderful panorama of the city opens. The possibility of restoration is being discussed.

Old Vat

Entertainment / leisure

Heated vats with water from a hydrogen sulfide mineral spring began to be used in Lumshory for medical procedures as early as the 17th century.

Patients with musculoskeletal disorders were treated with hydrogen sulfide baths. One of the ancient cast-iron vats is now in Austria, the other was found by a local resident on the banks of the Turichka River near his house. Now it is used again for its intended purpose. The vat is filled with cold mineral water from the spring, river stones are placed at the bottom, then the water is gradually heated over an open fire. When the temperature reaches 30 degrees, you can start taking a bath, alternating immersion in hot water with cooling in a mountain river. An old Austrian vat with a volume of 250 liters holds 2 people. Modern vats can hold up to 12 people.

Now in the village of Lumshory, different owners have 18 vats, cast according to the old technology. Three of them are located on the territory of the local koliba.
