Chornomyn Palace (White House)

Palace / manor , Architecture

The palace of the estate of Mykola Charnomskyi, the ruler of Countess Sofiya Potoska, was built at the beginning of the 19th century under the direction of the Italian architect Francesco Boffo, who was then the chief architect of Odesa.

The house was built of London white brick, had an elevator even then, and food was brought from the kitchen through underground passages. Flanked on two sides by a double colonnade, the building's appearance and layout closely resemble the White House in Washington, D.C., depicted on the $20 bill: three stories with large windows and a semicircular colonnade. The assembly hall with ceilings over 15 meters high is similar to the Oval Office. According to one version, the architect used drawings of an American mansion.

Currently, the building houses a high school.

Nativity of Blessed Virgin

Temple , Architecture

The wooden church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, perched on a high mountain above the Pivdenny Buh, welcomes everyone who enters the Pechera from the Nemyriv side.

It is located on a large, strategically advantageous plateau, under which are hidden the ancient caves that gave the village its name. It was here, on the site of an ancient Rus settlement, that in the 17th century, the Moldavian lord Duka, who was appointed by the Turkish sultan as the ruler of Right Bank Ukraine, built his castle in the 17th century. After the expulsion of Duka, who was famous for cruelty, from Ukraine in 1764, the castle was dismantled into building materials, which were used to build the foundation and fence of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin. The later belfry was probably built on the base of one of the defensive towers.

From the plateau in front of the church, a breathtaking panorama of the Pivdenny Buh valley with a cascade of rapids opens.

Potocki Estate

Temple , Architecture , Park / garden

A luxurious park on the banks of the Pivdenny Buh, several farm buildings and a mausoleum-tomb - all that remains of the once rich estate of the Potocki-Sveykivski in Pechera.

The park was founded at the end of the 17th century by the Moldavian voivode Heorhiy Duka, who owned Right Bank Ukraine at that time. His castle was not preserved, but later the new owners, the Potocki-Sveykivski family, took up the expansion of the park and the construction of a new palace.

The original rectangular layout of the park with a majestic four-row linden alley with 250-year-old lindens leading from the main gate to the palace is almost completely preserved. The park descends in terraces to the river and the baths, it is decorated with stone chaos, grottoes and the only park sculpture that has survived.

On the reverse side of the park is a chapel-mausoleum, built in the neo-Romanesque style according to the project of the architect Vladyslav Horodetskyi in 1904 by order of Kostyantyn and Yanyna Potocki. In Soviet times, it was used as a cinema. Today it is the church of Saint Andriy.

Several farm buildings, designed at the beginning of the 20th century by Yan Hoyrikh, have also been preserved.

The Potocki Palace was dismantled in the 1920s, and the Regional Rehabilitation Hospital was built on its foundation, which is still functioning (the "Pechera" sanatorium). The possibility of creating a tourist complex on the basis of the manor is under consideration.

Potocki Palace

Palace / manor , Architecture

The Potocki Palace in Tulchyn is a beautiful architectural ensemble, one of the best examples of classicism in Ukraine.

The manor was founded in 1757 by the Kyiv voivode Frantsishek Saleziy Potocki. After his son Stanislav Szchensnyi Potocki chose Tulchyn as his main residence, in 1782 the construction of a new palace was started according to the project of the architect Zhozef Lakrua.

The palace ensemble also includes a theater, arena, and Turkish bath. Interiors were designed by designer Merks and artist Latur. The pompous two-story palace in the palladio style is connected by oval galleries-greenhouses with two large wings. Around the palace, the English gardener Miller laid out a luxurious garden with exotic trees and shrubs, a system of ponds and canals, fountains, gazebos and sculptures.

In terms of luxury, the palace competed with the royal residences of Europe. Here Stanislav Szczensnyi Potocki received the Polish king Stanislav Avhust Ponyatovsky. Perhaps it was here that the count first met his future wife Sophia, in whose honor he later built a park in Uman, and the poet Pushkin met Potocki's daughters Sofiya and Olha, to whom he dedicated "Yevheniy Onyehin" and "Bakhchysarai Fountain".

The palace is currently occupied by the Tulchyn School of Culture. The facades of the central building have been partially restored, and the side wings are being restored. The grand staircase and stoves have been preserved in the interior.

Chetvertynsky Palace

Palace / manor , Architecture

The gloomy palace-chalet surrounded by old Christmas trees on the park side resembles a haunted house.

Built in Komarhorod in the 1830s by Chetvertynsky princes. In the second half of the 19th century, the building underwent a major reconstruction, the facades were decorated with carved wood and half-timbering like Swiss hunting castles. The greenhouse, which used to be adjacent to the main facade, has not been preserved.

The park surrounding the palace was laid out at the end of the 19th century by Count Balashov. Its area is about 2.5 hectares. There are more than 100 species and forms of trees and shrubs here. In addition to valuable conifers, black and walnut, Amur velvet and a number of local breeds grow.

Currently, the Chetvertynsky Palace is one of the buildings of the Komarhorod Agrarian Lyceum, most of the premises are in poor condition.

Academician Danylo Zabolotny Museum-Manor

Museum / gallery , Palace / manor

The memorial museum of Academician Danylo Zabolotny was founded in 1929 in his native village of Chobotarka (now Zabolotne) in Vinnytsia Region, where he was born, lived and was buried.

An outstanding microbiologist and epidemiologist, academician Danylo Zabolotny founded the world's first department of epidemiology in Odesa, as well as the Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology in Kyiv. In his native house under a thatched roof, the original interior has been completely preserved: a cabinet with the scientist's books, a Zeissian microscope with which he traveled through the deserts of Asia, an old straw block on a hanger. An exposition with wax figures in one of the rooms reproduces the scene of Zabolotny receiving a local patient during his stay in his native village.

On the territory of the manor, a summer kitchen has been recreated and a separate exhibition house has been built, where you can see a large-scale diorama "Danylo Zabolotny on an expedition to fight the plague", which reproduces one of the episodes of the scientist's work in Manchuria. Returning from expeditions, Zabolotny always brought exotic plants with him. The Carpathian birch planted by him, an Ussuri maple and a large dogwood bush still grow in the garden near the house.

Not far from the house is the grave of Danylo Kyrylovych with a tombstone in the style of constructivism by the artist Vasyl Krychevskyi.

The manor-museum of academician Zabolotny is part of the structure of the Institute of Microbiology and Virology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Chetvertynsky Palace

Palace / manor , Architecture

The Chetvertynsky manor in Antopil was founded at the end of the 18th century by Prince Antoniy Yan Svyatopolk-Chetvertynskyi, castellan of Bratslav.

First, a landscape park in the English style was laid out, and in 1830 a large palace in the style of classicism was built. The main facade of the palace is decorated with a four-column portico of the Ionic order, crowned with a triangular pediment and a stepped attic. A distinctive feature of the building are the balconies, located along the axes of the risalites at the level of the second floor, fenced with metal angular bars. The park facade is more modest, its center is marked by a semicircular risalite.

In the interiors, moldings of ceilings, highly artistic marble fireplaces have been preserved. Single-story wings in the Neo-Renaissance style were attached to the main building. The farm buildings, built mainly at the beginning of the 20th century by the new owners of the estate, the Yaroshynskyi, have also been preserved: a stable, a garage and a warehouse, a glacier, a dovecote, a gate, a stone fence.

The 27-hectare park was laid out in the 1880s on the basis of a natural forest, as evidenced by the trees that have survived to this day, including giant ash trees that reach 2 meters in diameter. The compositional axis of the park is the system of ponds.

During Soviet times, the Chetvertynsky Palace housed first a rest house, and later the Antopil boarding house for the mentally ill, which still operates today (visiting is difficult).

Holy Scapular Mother of God Church

Temple , Architecture

The Church of the Mother of God of the Holy Scapular in Bratslav was built in 1865-1884 with donations from parishioners. Before that, there were wooden Catholic churches in the city, the first of which is mentioned in the 16th century, but they often burned down.

The new Bratslav church was built of brick in the Baroque style. On both sides of the facade rose two Gothic towers covered with gilded iron, on which two gilded iron crosses were installed. Between the towers of the church there were three stone statues: the Mother of God with the Savior, Saint Joseph and Saint John. In 1889, the church was consecrated by Bishop Kyrylo Lyubovydskyi.

During Soviet times, the shrine was closed, the building housed a cultural center. Today, the Bratslav church is active again.
