Attractions of Bila Tserkva district

The complex of shopping rows in Bila Tserkva was built at the beginning of the 19th century by Count Branytskyi.

Built in the style of early classicism, the enclosed guest courtyard faces the square with large arches with formal porticos along the axis of the four facades. Porticos played a large compositional role, closing the perspective of four mutually perpendicular streets, planned along the axes of the square Market Square. The originally designed shopping complex with an area of about 5,000 square meters was designed for 85 benches. The opening of shopping streets significantly stimulated trade in Bila Tserkva and contributed to the expansion of the Jewish community.

The old shopping rows is still used for its intended purpose - shops and cafes are located here. Various festivals and cultural events take place on the territory.

The tomb-chapel of the Sveikovskyi (Świejkowski) family in Tetiiv was built in 1805 next to the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, founded by them. A sculpture of Saint Yan Nepomuk once stood in front of the main entrance to the church, so the church was also called by his name.

The chapel is built in the forms of classicism and outwardly resembles an ancient temple. On the four-column Ionic portico there is an inscription in Polish: "Tym ktorzy zmartwychwstaną" ("To those who will rise"). Above the forged door is the coat of arms of the Świejkowski family.

The Sveikovskyi chapel is an architectural monument of national importance. Now it belongs to the Roman Catholic parish of All Saints in the city of Tetiiv. Holy Mass is held on Sundays.

The burial church of the Pidhorsky family in Antoniv was built in 1810.

The stone temple has an unusual pyramidal shape of a ziggurat - a stepped vault is erected above the square building, which ends with an obelisk in the form of a truncated pyramid.

The temple-tomb also served as the parish church of the Catholic community of Antoniv and the surrounding villages.

Now the church is half-ruined.

The Transfiguration Cathedral is the main Orthodox church of the Bila Tserkva, a vivid example of the transition in church architecture from baroque forms to classicism.

The Orthodox Cathedral was built in 1833-1839 at the expense of Countess Oleksandra Branytska on the site of the dilapidated Mykilska Church, founded in 1706 by Hetman Ivan Mazepa. There was a belief in the city that the one who builds a new church on the site of Mykilska's Church will face inevitable death. The countess died in the year of completion of construction and was buried in the cathedral, built on her order.

The stone building has a height of 40 meters, but it looks rather squat. The dome, located above the central part, crowns a massive vault, which has a hemispherical shape. The walls are decorated with pilasters.

In 1930, the Transfiguration Cathedral was closed, in 1956 it was restored. Now the temple is active. There is a chapel nearby, which is a preserved fragment of Mykilska's Church.

In 2023, by decision of the city council of Bila Tserkva, the buildings of the Transfiguration Cathedral and the Mykilska Church were handed over to the Bila Tserkva Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

A monument to dead bikers was opened near the checkpoint at the entrance to Bila Tserkva from the Kyiv side in 2007.

The bronze sculpture of a flying motorcyclist (sculptor Anton Maslyk) is located at a height of 7 meters on a concrete support 11 meters high. The vertical support and outstretched arms of the motorcyclist form a cross. Another small cross is on top of the monument.

Funds for the creation of the monument were collected by the charity fund "Memory of the dead bikers".

The Branitsky Winter Palace served as the city residence of the count family in Bila Tserkva, while in the summer the Branitskys lived in a country palace on the territory of Oleksandriya Arboretum.

The two-story building in the style of classicism was built at the end of the 18th century on the bank of the Ros River to the west of Castles Hill. The main facade is decorated with a four-column portico of the Ionic order.

Now the building of the former Winter Palace houses the Art School named after Yuriy Pavlenko. Almost no interiors have been preserved.

A small, elegant country palace surrounded by a park was built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries by Crown Hetman Frantsysk-Ksaveriy Branytskyi, the founder of the Oleksandriya Park in Bila Tserkva.

A bas-relief above the portal reminds of Branytskyi's romantic relationship with his wife Oleksandra.

In the basement next to the palace, according to legend, the miracle-working icon of the Mother of God from Rudoselska appeared to Stanislav Zalevskyi, the new owner of the estate.

To this day, the palace has survived in a deplorable state and continues to crumble.

The Holy Trinity Church in Rude Selo was built in the classicism style on the site of an old wooden church.

The miraculous icon of the Mother of God from Rude Selo is kept here, the miraculous phenomenon of which happened to one of the owners of Rude Selo, Stanislav Zalevskyi, in the basement of his estate.

The church has been restored. The parish of the Trinity Church belongs to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

The complex of stone buildings of two mills (roller and mill) was built on the Rastavitsa River in the middle of the 19th century, when these lands were owned by Mr. Myasniaev.

The gloomy pseudo-Gothic three-story building with spires, located on the right bank of the river, is considered one of the most original examples of industrial architecture in the Kyiv region. A long two-story brick and stone building on the left bank resembles a medieval castle. This is one of the oldest water mills in the Kyiv region.

Territorially, the complex of ancient mills is located in the village of Chubyntsi, near Buky.

The complex of buildings of the postal station arose in Bila Tserkva in the 19th century, when a regular connection between Moscow and Odesa was established.

The premises of the post office (functioning as intended), the hotel (Taras Shevchenko stayed here), the inn, the carriage yard, the forge and the stables are made in a classical style, the architectural integrity and original layout of the complex has been preserved.

The Fellini restaurant is located in one of the premises.

The water mill on the Ros River in Bila Tserkva is currently not working. A complex of mill buildings and dams blocking the river has been preserved.

The mill offers a picturesque view of the Ros River and the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene.

The "Wall" garden ("Mur"garden) was created on the territory of the "Oleksandriya" arboretum at the beginning of the 19th century by the park gardener August Ens using the old Western European technology of creating gardens on a territory enclosed by a high fence.

The total area of ​​the garden is 3.5 hectares. The brick walls are 3 meters high and 70 centimeters wide. All the dimensions of the walls and the aspect ratio are reduced to the sacred values ​​of digital mythology. A place with high energy was chosen for the construction of the garden, and the walls of the structure are absolutely precisely oriented in space. Each of the walls of the garden exactly corresponds to the cardinal points.

After the Bolshevik coup of 1917, the fruit trees were gradually removed and agricultural crops were grown on the vacated area for many decades.

In 2008, the "Wall" orchard received a second life when a program was implemented to restore the orchard. Gardener Mykola Illyenko created a collection of over 100 ancient varieties of fruit crops selected from the 17th-19th centuries, laid out a section of a formal garden and planted a wide collection of popular fruit and berry crops selected from the 20th-21st centuries, including the latest collection of table grape varieties. The restoration project for the landscape section of the Wall garden was carried out according to archival materials from 1858.

Currently, the Wall garden has completely restored the layout of the ancient garden: 8 blocks, four of which are central and four are wall-mounted. The central blocks are planted with apple trees of different ripening periods, pears, plums, apricots, cherry plums, sweet cherries, and peaches. The wall blocks are planted with actinidia, collection grape varieties (30 varieties), dogwood, garden strawberries, jujube, and persimmon. Currently, 2,200 fruit trees of Ukrainian and foreign selection are grown here, which combine more than 300 varieties.

In the fall, you can buy delicious juicy fruits of apples, grapes, dogwood and other fruits and berries in the "Wall" garden.

The healing spring is located on a meadow in a forest grove on the eastern outskirts of the village of Rizhky.

According to legend, the spring was discovered at the end of the 19th century. They began to regard him as a saint after one of the local residents saw the phenomenon of the Virgin bathing as the source.

Before the Bolshevik coup of 1917, the source of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was a place of mass pilgrimage, as the fame of the healing properties of its water spread. Eyewitnesses said that after praying and drinking this water, people regained their sight, "revived" their legs, etc. During Soviet times, the source was repeatedly tried to be destroyed, but local residents restored it each time.

The water from the spring is extremely clean and saturated with silver, as it breaks through rare siliceous-silver rocks.

On holidays and Sundays, religious services are held near the Rizhky spring.

Bila Tserkva Museum of Local Lore presents a large collection of objects of material and spiritual culture of the Southern Kyiv region.

The museum was founded in 1924 by local historian Stepan Drozdov-Myshkivskyi on the basis of his own collection of antiquities. The museum is now housed in an original constructivist building erected in 1983 on Castle Hill opposite the Church of Saint John the Baptist, near the foundations of the ancient Church of Saint George in the time of Prince Yaroslav the Wise.

The exposition consists of nine chapters that tell about the nature of Southern Kyiv, the ancient history of the region, the events of the Polish-Lithuanian era and the Cossacks, the heyday of the city in the XVIII-XIX centuries, the development of industry and education, the Soviet era and modernity.

Among the most valuable exhibits of the museum: the Scythian sword akinak, a unique Chernyakhiv lamp with the image of a human face, ancient Rus women's jewelry. Valuable relics of the Cossack times are the flag of the Cossack Hundred of the Bila Tserkva Regiment, a mace, a bunchuk, timpani and weapons. The basis of the collection of numismatics are Roman coins, Kyiv hryvnias, money of the Cossack era. The art department presents icons, paintings and sculptures of the XVII-XX centuries from the Branytsky collection. Visitors are especially interested in the recreated interiors of housing of different segments of the population at that time.

A modern reconstruction of the Church of Saint George, which gave the city its current name, was built on the Castle Hill of ancient Saint George near the Bila Tserkva Museum of Local Lore. A monument to the city's founder, Prince Yaroslav the Wise, has been erected on the observation deck above the Ros River.

The hospital building in Stavyshche was built in 1911 at the expense of the Branytsky magnates.

It still serves its purpose.

Today it is the most remarkable architectural monument of the village.
