Holy Dormition Cathedral

Temple , Architecture

The Cathedral of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Pereyaslav is located in the western part of the former city center, on the site of the church of the same name, founded in the 12th century.

Before its destruction by the Tatars in the 13th century, it served as a house church for the princes of Pereyaslav. In 1586, Prince Vasyl Ostrozkyi rebuilt the temple as a military cathedral. It was here on January 8, 1654 that the Cossack foreman, led by Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, took an oath of loyalty to the Moscow Tsar. A year later, during a big fire, the wooden building burned down.

Modern architectural forms - a five-domed church in the pseudo-Byzantine style - the cathedral acquired at the end of the 19th century. The church is still active.

House of the Weeping Widow (Arshavsky Mansion)

Architecture

The Art Nouveau mansion was built in 1907 by architect Eduard-Ferdinand Bradtman by order of Serhiy Arshavsky, a Poltava merchant of the 2nd guild.

In 1918, the building was nationalized, and to this day it houses government structures.

The facade is decorated with a sad female face, which drips water during the rain, and it seems that the mask is crying. Hence the popular name of the mansion.

The former building of the Institute of Noble Girls is located on the hill dominating Khreshchatyk in Kyiv, which offers the best view of Maydan Nezalezhnosti.

The building of the institute was built according to the project of the architect Vikentiy Beretti, and was the property of the Kyiv noble assembly. The institute provided general education, aesthetic and ethical education, graduates were given the right to work as tutors in noble and merchant families. Kovalevsky House

Architecture

This house was designed and built in Kyiv by the architect Pavlo Alyoshin by order of the official on special orders of Kovalevsky.

Made in the style of a medieval castle, with a huge predominance of Romanesque style elements in the decoration of the facades. When designing the mansion, the architect faced a difficult planning task: to place a manor house with a stable, a cowshed, a garage and a garden on a small plot measuring 46 by 35 meters. The architect even had to use the underground space - under the paving of the yard there was a cellar with a glacier and a shed for firewood and coal.

Interesting features - a faceted tower with a helmet-shaped dome hides the fact that the building is built at an angle of 78 degrees, at which the streets adjoin each other; drain pipes are hidden in the wall so that their shadow does not visually break the facade; and on the bas-relief from the side of Shovkovychna Street, the architect is depicted in his own person in the form of a cat.

Kyiv Children's Railway

Entertainment / leisure

Kyiv Children's Railway (Mala Pivdenno-Zakhidna) was opened in 1953 on the territory of the current Syretsky Park, near Babyn Yar.

The 2.8-kilometer-long road is laid along a ring road, in one place it crosses a ravine on a 20-meter-high viaduct. At the time of its opening, it had a Gr-336 steam locomotive (made in Germany) and 5 wooden wagons, later it was reequipped several times. The last reconstruction was carried out in 2001.

Trains run between two stations: "Vyshenka" and "Yablunka". The Children's Railway operates two TU-7 diesel locomotives and the same Gr-336 steam locomotive that started the history of the Children's Railway.

Kyiv Television Tower

Architecture

The Kyiv Television Tower is the tallest building in Ukraine (382 meters), at the time of its construction it was the tallest free-standing lattice structure in the world. It is still among the ten tallest TV towers on the planet. It is located on Syrets in Kyiv, next to Babyn Yar.

The Kyiv TV tower on Syrets was built in 1968–1973 to replace the old TV tower, which was located on the hill above Khreshchatyk, next to the TV and radio building. The new TV tower provided television signal coverage for almost 100 kilometers around Kyiv.

The tower is all-metal, latticed, entirely composed of steel pipes of various diameters. The construction was carried out by a unique method of superstructure "from the mountain to the bottom" without the use of lifting cranes of tag-helicopters. The central pipe with a diameter of 4 meters serves as an elevator shaft. Technical premises are located on two levels.

The TV tower is a strategic object with limited access, no tours are conducted to it.

In 1990, a new high-rise television center was opened nearby, nicknamed the "pencil" for its characteristic shape (Yuriya Illyenka Street, 42). It earned a bad reputation because it was built on the site of an old Jewish cemetery. Since 2006, the television center has been home to a Television Museum.

On March 1, 2022, Russian forces launched two targeted missile strikes at the construction of the Kyiv television tower. The tower's unique structure survived, but the hardware and transformer substation that powers the TV tower were damaged.

Lysa Hora (Bald Mountain)

Historic area

Lysa Hora is a historical area in the Vydubichi district, which is traditionally associated with evil spirits.

The name "Lysa Hora" (Bald Mountain) and the bad reputation of the place of the witches' coven are attributed to several hills in Kyiv, but the "official" name is fixed on the hill in the southern part of the city, between Saperna slobidka and Stolychne Shose.

In 1872-1876, the Lysohirskyi Fort of the New Pechersk Fortress was built here (earthen ramparts with brick ramparts have been preserved). In Soviet times, a military radio engineering complex was based here.

Now this place is popular with Tolkienists and representatives of other informal youth trends.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine

Architecture

The pompous building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on Mykhaylivska Square in Kyiv appeared in 1938 on the site of the ancient Church of the Three Saints.

It was the first building of the government complex of the capital of the Ukrainian SSR, which was planned to be built on the space from Mykhaylivska to Sofiyivska Square. In 1934, the Saint Michael's Gold-Domed Cathedral was demolished to clear the space under the Government Square, and the demolition of Saint Sophia of Kyiv was planned.

The first building for the Central Committee of the CP(b)U was built according to the project of the Leningrad architect Yosyp Lanhbard. The second twin building was to be built on the site of Saint Michael's Cathedral. A giant monument to Lenin was supposed to be placed between them. The implementation of these barbaric plans was prevented by the war. The Germans did not use the building. After the war, it again housed the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine.

Currently, it is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

Museum "Kamyanytsya of Kyiv Viyt" (Petro I House)

Architecture , Museum / gallery

The Museum "Kamyanytsya of Kyiv Voit" is located in Kyiv in the oldest of the surviving civil buildings of Podil, which has undergone many reconstructions. According to the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine, the building has the name - "Residential building of Yan Bykovskyi (Petro I House)".

According to legend, in 1706 Petro I, who directed the construction of the Pechersk fortress, stopped here. However, the information about the Russian tsar's residence here is not documented.

Later, the house belonged to the Viyt of Kyiv Yan Bykovskyi, who kept a tavern in it. Then there was a "house of humility", a parish school, an orphanage.

Now the premises are occupied by the Museum "Kamyanytsya of Kyiv Viyt", which functions under the rights of a subdivision of the State Historical and Architectural Reserve "Ancient Kyiv".

The museum exposition explores the history of the medieval monument at the corner of Kostyantynivska and Khoryva streets in the context of self-government and traditions of charity in Kyiv. Among the most valuable exhibits is the rare baroque icon "Mother of God with the Child" of the 18th century.

National Historical and Architectural Museum "Kyiv Fortress"

Historic area , Castle / fortress , Architecture , Museum / gallery

The National Historical and Architectural Museum "Kyiv Fortress" was established in 1927 on the basis of part of the fortifications of one of the world's largest surviving stone and earth fortresses.

The history of the Kyiv fortress in Pechersk begins in the second half of the XVII century, when the Cossacks under the leadership of Hetman Ivan Samoylovych built an earthen quadrangular fortress with a fence around the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Larger fortifications were carried out during the reign of Peter I, when the laurel was surrounded by a stone wall with loopholes and four towers at the expense of Hetman Ivan Mazepa, and later a more perfect fortress with nine earthen bastions was added to it.

In 1831-1856, the New Pechersk Fortress was built, consisting of the Kyiv-Pechersk Citadel, Vasylkivsky and Hospital fortifications, separately located defensive towers, barracks, arsenal workshops and other buildings.

One of the key nodes of defense was the Hospital Fortification, which is perfectly preserved to this day - on its territory is the Main Military Clinical Hospital.

The Kosyi caponier, located outside the main shaft of the Hospital Fortification, houses the Kyiv Fortress Museum with expositions "History of Fortification in Ukraine" and "History of the Use of Kyiv Fortress Buildings", an exhibition "From Nuclear to Shell", as well as an open-air exposition from defensive ramparts, fortress wall caponiers and ancient guns.

Parts of the museum complex are the Spassky bastion of the Kyiv-Pechersk citadel and the largest in Europe Lysohirsky fort with an area of almost 120 hectares in Holosiyvskyi district of Kyiv.

National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life "Pyrohiv"

Museum / gallery , Ethnographic complex

The National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine "Pyrohiv" gives an opportunity to feel the Ukrainian national flavor and all the diversity of nature and ethnic cultures of different regions of Ukraine.

The country's largest open-air museum (open-air museum) with an area of 133 hectares was founded in 1969 on the southern outskirts of Kyiv, on the relief territory of the ancient suburban village of Pyrohiv, from which it received its informal name.

Among the various landscapes reminiscent of the pastoral hills of the Dnipro, and the steep Carpathian Mountains, and dense Polissia forests, and dry southern steppes, scattered typical of these regions hamlets with authentic wooden buildings of the XVIII-XX centuries. All of them were brought from different parts of the country: temples, houses, outbuildings. In total, more than 300 buildings.

The compositional center of the complex is a group of windmills on a hill above the Singing Field. The landscape panorama is complemented by wooden churches, the oldest of which is the Church of Saint Paraskeva in 1742 from the village of Zarubyntsi in Cherkasy region. The church of Saint Michael the Archangel may be even older - radiocarbon dating dates some of its parts to 1528.

Authentic interiors with ethnographic collections are recreated in the houses of traditional peasant yards, which give an idea of typical occupations and life of different ethnographic groups of Ukrainians: Bukovyna, Volyn, Hutsuls, Podilia, Polishchuky, Slobozhanshyna and others.

You can taste the most popular dishes of Ukrainian cuisine (borsch, kulish, dumplings), prepared according to traditional recipes, in an existing tavern or ham. There is also a food court on the main avenue, which offers popular street food.

During the traditional folk festivals (Kolodiy, Easter, Green Holidays, Ivan Kupala, Pokrova) the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine "Pyrohiv" organizes folk festivals, concerts and performances with the participation of folk groups.

Themed festivals and fairs are held regularly.
