Attractions of Zaporizhzhia

The Zaporizhzhia Regional Museum of Local Lore is located in the former building of the Zemsky Administration (1912) - one of the few surviving buildings of pre-revolutionary Oleksandrivsk.

Founded by archeologist and folklorist Yakiv Novitskyi. More than 100,000 exhibits highlight the history of the city from ancient times to the Second World War. The most interesting collections: paleontological remains of animals from the Neogene and Anthropogenic periods; archaeological finds from the Zaporizhzhia mound; Sarmatian ornaments; collections of insects; stuffed animals of rare birds; weapons and household items of the Zaporizhzhian Cossacks.

One of the departments is devoted to the native of the Zaporizhzhia region, Otaman Nestor Makhno, who became famous during the revolutionary years as the leader of the anarchist people's movement in the southern regions of Ukraine.

The "City Beyond the Thresholds" Museum Studios is a branch of the "Khortytsia" National Reserve, located in the center of the city of Zaporizhzhia, on the second floor of the "Shoes House". It is an exhibition space and a cultural hub for the cooperation of cultural institutions and figures with the aim of popularizing Ukrainian history and culture.

The exhibition "Zaporizhzhia through the Ages: A Heroic History" is permanently open, where part of the exhibits from the Zaporizhzhian Cossacks History Museum, which is closed for reconstruction, is presented. Its sections are devoted to the Scythian era, the period of Kyivan Rus and the Cossack times. The expositions are designed in the style of a museum still life. In the exhibition hall, visitors will see symbolic boats - an ancient Rus boat, a Cossack Chayka, a Cossack ship - which combine and weave different pages of history into a single "text".

Another exhibition presents the latest archaeological finds that were discovered during the survey of the washed-up areas of the coast of the Dnipro River, which appeared as a result of the Russian aggressors blowing up the dam of the Kakhovskaya HPP. About 80 artifacts representing different historical periods from the Bronze Age, the Scythian Age, the Middle Ages to the Cossack period are presented in three display cases: fragments of molded ware and ancient Greek amphorae, a Bronze Age dagger, stone tools, a sling stone, varvarkas, arrowheads, arrows weapons of the Cossack period, a fragment of a mirror, a bracelet, a blacksmith's hammer, etc.

The photo exhibition "Reserved Khortytsia" is a creative installation in the form of unrolled photo film of the second half of the 20th century, supplemented with mirrors, branches and sand, which carry certain symbolism.

Jumping with a rope (Flying rope) in Zaporizhzhia is carried out on the iron Arch bridge connecting the island of Khortytsia with the right bank of the Dnipro.

The Archway bridge in Zaporizhzhia was built in 1974 according to the project of Mykola Artemenko. The height of the bridge is 40 meters with a length of 320 meters. Here, for the first time in the practice of Soviet bridge construction, a unique 205-meter-long metal prefabricated beam was used, which works together with a stiffening beam.

In 2000, Oleksandr Shkalikov performed the first rope jump from the bridge. Flying rope or Bridge swinging rope differs from classic bungee jumping in that when jumping on a dynamic climbing rope, there is a direct transfer to the pendulum, which is safe for the person who jumps. The rope is passed and fastened under the bridge. The attraction on the Zaporizhzhia iron bridge is organized by the club of extreme sports "Hermitage".

Jumping with a rope in Zaporizhzhia is possible in several variants: in a climbing system or, in special braces, by the legs, along or across the bridge, with or without diving, various exotic jumps, for example blindfolded, with an umbrella, couples.

The Holy Intercession Cathedral is the main Orthodox shrine of Zaporizhzhia.

The cathedral was rebuilt on the site of the five-headed stone Intercession temple destroyed by the Bolsheviks (the Komsomolsky recreation park was laid on its site).

The exterior and magnificent interiors of the cathedral are reproduced from old photographs.

Museum of Architecture of Zaporizhzhia acquaints visitors with the main architectural and city-planning directions and styles of the city.

This is the first in a series of so-called "craft museums" that tell the story through "live", an interactive exhibition that demonstrates the urban development from the first Oleksandrivsk's fortress to modern neighborhoods.

The museum consists of four departments dedicated to the construction of Stariy Oleksandrivsk, Mennonite colonies, the era of industrial modernization, the postwar reconstruction of the city.

Copies of old Oleksandrivsk doors created by masters, video installations and carefully preserved architectural elements are woven into the design of the museum space.

The museum-gallery of applied ceramics and painting of Illya and Oleksiy Burlay in Zaporizhzhia is located in the basement of the 18th century building, which once housed a laboratory for the study of clay for the production of bricks and tiles.

The collection includes materials related to the history and first buildings of the old Oleksandrivsk (now Zaporizhzhia), old maps and photo documents, a collection of old roof tiles and bricks, the history of the brick factory in the village of Karantinka.

The museum is also dedicated to the work of the socialist realist artist Oleksiy Burlay and the documentary artist Illya Burlay.

The "Museum and School" project is being implemented, within the framework of which festivals of creativity are held.

The Musical Instruments History Museum "BarabanZA" operates on the basis of the music hub of the same name in the Radio House of Zaporizhzhia city, which combines an ethnic music club, a school of playing ethnic musical instruments and a musical rehearsal base.

The museum was founded in 2016 by the public organization "Center for the Development of Business Technologies and Culture".

About 500 musical instruments from different countries of the world are presented in the exposition. Among them are such unique ones as a mechanical glass marimba, meditative singing jugs and stones, and a steel cello. Another unique exhibit is the drum of the last molfar of the Carpathians, Mykhaylo Nechay.

During the tour, you can not only see the exhibits, but also hear their voice. Visitors can play some instruments themselves.

The "BarabanZA" museum has a gift shop where you can buy replicas of musical instruments or order the manufacture of individual copies.

Phenomenal Strength Museum, dedicated to the history of prominent Zaporizhzhia athletes, opened in Zaporizhzhia in 2021.

This is the second of the so-called "craft museums", which provide an opportunity to get acquainted with the history up close, interacting directly with some exhibits.

In the museum you can learn about the history of various sports, see retro photos of important sporting events in Zaporizhzhia, get acquainted with the stories of the most outstanding athletes of city.

The exhibition presents 125 original exhibits, including personal belongings of athletes, awards, videos from their private archives. Among them - a ticket to the Olympics in Tokyo famous Ukrainian weightlifter Leonid Zhabotynsky, where he won the first Olympic "gold" in 1964, swimsuit swimmer Olha Strazheva, in which she competed at the Olympics in 1988-1989, medal medalist of the 2000 Olympic Games Olena Zhupina and others.

In addition, visitors can enjoy interactive elements of the museum space, including table football, treadmill, arm wrestling table and more.

The museum of the private joint-stock company "Dniprospetsstal" in Zaporizhzhia was opened in 1967.

It is located on the second floor of the building of the production department of this industrial enterprise, which has been operating since 1932 and specializes in the production of grade stainless steel.

The total number of museum objects is more than 6,000 storage units. In particular, the exposition presents mock-ups of the factory's production workshops, workers' overalls, samples of the company's products, awards and gifts to the team, photos of important events in the company's history, and documents.

Saint Andrew's Cathedral was built in 2000 at the expense of the Motor-Sich company and other patrons.

It is located on the site of an unremarkable cinema, which was adjacent to the passage of motor builders. Until 2000, the Saint Andrew's religious community of the city met in the converted cinema hall.

The temple is made in the form of a cross with a large central dome and two small domes on the sides. Nearby is a high bell tower.

The con-catheral sanctuary of God the Merciful Father is the only Catholic temple in Zaporizhzhia.

The Roman Catholic parish existed in Oleksandrivsk (Zaporizhzhia) even before the revolution, but in the 1930s the Catholic church was closed and later destroyed.

Since 1999, a new church has been built in the city. A cornerstone taken from the Basilica of Saint Peter the Apostle in Rome was laid in its wall. In 2004, the consecration ceremony of the temple of God the Merciful Father took place (the only one under such an address in Eastern Europe).

The building is rectangular, divided internally by rows of columns and pillars into an odd number of longitudinal parts (3 naves) with lighting from upper windows and an apse niche in the altar part. Classically strict interior decoration.

The Museum of Ethnography of the Peoples of Southern Ukraine was established in 1997 at the Faculty of History of Zaporizhzhia National University.

Several generations of student historians managed to collect one of the best collections of tiles, household items and relics in the territory of Steppe Ukraine. 

In 2015, the Museum of Soviet Life was opened in the adjacent room. Among its exhibits are furniture, household items and appliances of the 20th century. The clothes of those times are hung in the closets, a place is reserved for costume jewelry, cosmetics, and perfumes of the Soviet era. Featured record player collection, post-war magazines, record phone collection, radio, and more. Many family letters, photographs, documents, and certificates are also exhibited.

The museum complex of the Zaporizhzhia National University also includes the ZNU Zoological Museum and the Water Museum.

The Technical Progress History Museum of the Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic National University was opened in 2016 on the occasion of the celebration of the 116th anniversary of the establishment of the educational institution.

The museum in it was started back in 1970, when the first museum room of the then Zaporizhzhia Mechanical Engineering Institute was opened.

The current exposition demonstrates the stages of development of science and technology in Zaporizhzhia from the 18th to the beginning of the 11th century. Instruments, computing devices, radio communication devices, electronics of various periods of the 20th century are presented. The history of the technical university is told by photos and certificates of graduates of the last century, literature and interior elements from the time of the establishment of the institution, layouts, models and projects of graduates.

The central exhibit of the museum is the ZAZ-965 "Zaporozhets" car - one of the first to roll off the assembly line of the then "Komunar" plant (now "AvtoZAZ") in 1960.

The Motor Sich Museum of Technology in Zaporizhzhia was opened in 2012.

The museum is located in the former building of the station of young technicians near the territory of Motor Sich - one of the world's largest enterprises for the production of aircraft engines.

The basis for the creation of the Aviation Museum was the National Museum of Enterprise History, opened in 1980. The exhibition presents aircraft engines manufactured by PJSC "Motor Sich", from the first reciprocating star-shaped aircraft engines to modern turbojet engines, as well as models of the first aircraft and helicopters. etc.

Upstairs is an exposition of 26 models of retro motorcycles, as well as consumer goods produced by the plant: chainsaws, motoblocks, milk separators, wind farms, etc.

A Mi-24 transport and combat helicopter with a Motor Sich engine has been installed at the entrance to the aviation museum building.

In February 2023, exhibition exhibits were removed from the Technology Museum in order to protect the residents of the surrounding buildings from a Russian rocket attack.

Voznesenivsky Park is considered one of the most romantic places in Zaporizhzhia.

An open green area of ​​4.5 hectares with elements of modern landscape design is located next to the cascade of "Rainbow" fountains on the Dnipro embankment.

The park got its name in honor of the village of Voznesenka, which was located in this place in ancient times.

An artificial pond with fountains was created in Voznesenivsky Park, over which in 2009, with the financial support of Motor Sich, the Lovers' Bridge (the bridge to Mother-in-law and Mother-in-law) was thrown, which became very popular for wedding photo shoots.

In addition, there is an avenue of newlyweds with a sculpture of two hearts in Voznesenivsky Park. By tradition, brides and grooms come here after marriage registration.

Another landmark of Voznesenivsky Park is the historical monument to Prince Svyatoslav Ihorovych.

Voznesenivsky Park is one of the most well-kept, cleanest and orderly parks in Zaporizhzhia, a place for recreation and various cultural events.
