Shpola

The city of Shpola is located in the center of the Cherkasy region, between Cherkasy and Uman. Geographical center of Ukraine (the memorial is located 2 kilometers east of the city, near the village of Maryanivka).

It was first mentioned in the 18th century as a village of the Zvenyhorodka Starostvo. At the beginning of the 19th century, the estate was owned by the Lopukhin noble family. It is believed that the woman with a sheaf depicted on Shpola's coat of arms is Daryna Lopukhina, who did a lot for the development of the city.

For some time, Shpola belonged to Count Orlov under the obligation to build a cathedral in memory of Prince Hrihoriy Potemkin and Dariya Lopukhina.

Under him, the development of industry began, the railway was built. Abaza built a palace on the southern outskirts of the city, which now houses a boarding school.

The poet Ivan Kulyk was born in the city, and the brothers Mykhaylo and Oleksiy Kolomiychenko, doctors and scientists.
