In the village of Halchyn, the Hryshkivtsi hromada is restoring a historic estate from the early 19th century, which previously belonged to a nobleman-adventurer with Cossack roots.
The 2025 tourist season has started at the former estate of writer and public figure Mykhailo Chaikovsky (Michał Czajkowski) in the village of Halchyn in Zhytomyr region. The activists of the Cultural and Artistic Space "Chaikovsky Space" reported about the first excursions this year on the official Facebook page.
The manor house in Halchyn was built in the late 18th or early 19th century by nobleman Michał Głębocki, a participant in the Franco-Russian War. His daughter Petronelya married a Volyn nobleman of the Cossack family, Stanislav Chaikovsky. Their son Mykhailo Chaikovsky was born in this estate, who later became a famous writer, political and military figure.
A descendant of Hetman Ivan Bryukhovetsky, Mykhailo Chaikovsky took an active part in the Polish uprising of 1830-1831. He then emigrated to Turkey and converted to Islam under the name Mekhmet Sadyk-Pasha, and participated in the Crimean War on the side of the Ottomans. At the end of his life, he returned to the Russian Empire, converted to Orthodoxy, and devoted himself to writing.
During Soviet times, the Chaikovsky estate housed a village school. But since 2022, the Hryshkivtsi hromada, to which the village of Halchyn belongs, has decided to develop rural tourism on the basis of the estate. The manor house has been cleared of debris and a historical exhibition dedicated to the history of the village and the figure of Mykhailo Chaikovsky has been placed in it.
Before the start of this season, the Chaikovsky estate was given a makeover, with landscaping work carried out and three more rooms of the estate prepared for visitors. You can book a tour at the link…
