Genocide Museum "Territory of Memory" was opened in Odesa

The museum of different times genocides "Territory of Memory" was opened in Odesa on the initiative of the Odesa Holocaust Research Center and the charity fund "Memory. Dignity. Freedom". It is a modern museum space that combines a library, exhibitions and a platform for discussions.

The presented expositions highlight the terrible events of the genocide of peoples in different countries: Ukrainian, Jewish, Armenian, Serbian, Crimean Tatar, and others.

As the initiator and head of the project Pavlo Kozlenko noted, the main goal is to arouse interest in the study of genocides, to try to understand how and why the killing of people based on belonging to a certain ethnic group became possible and by what methods it was carried out.

"We want to show what happens to society when people stop fighting and, even, notice evil and violence, that genocide is the most serious crime against humanity. We paid special attention to the topic of responsibility for genocide, which is stipulated by international law." - the press service of the Odesa Regional Council quotes Kozlenka as saying.

The modern interactive space was created according to the project of Vitalina Verbovetska, Orina Babentsova and Aryna Goncharova - students of the Odessa Academy of Construction and Architecture, who won the museum design competition held at their university in December 2023.

Multimedia digital technologies in the exhibition space of this compact museum are used not just as technical equipment, but turn into unique exhibits that serve to reveal the exposition scenario, strengthen the informativeness, communication and attractiveness of the museum exposition, the authors of the project note.

The museum presents works authored by famous scientists, international lawyers and political figures, and the main emotions emphasized are human compassion and the desire to understand the pain and tragedy of the victims of genocide and to realize the importance of the inevitability of punishment.

The official opening of the museum was attended by scientists, representatives of the authorities, clergy and residents of the city.

Музей геноцидів різних часів "Територія пам’яті" відкрився в Одесі з ініціативи Oдеського центру дослідження Голокосту та благодійного фонду "Памʼять. Гідність. Свобода". Це сучасний музейний простір, що поєднує в собі бібліотеку, експозиції та майданчик для дискусій.

У представлених експозиціях висвітлено страшні події геноциду народів у різних країнах: українського, єврейського, вірменського, сербського, кримсько-татарського та інших.

Як зазначив ініціатор та керівник проекту Павло Козленко, головна мета – викликати інтерес до вивчення геноцидів, спробувати зрозуміти як і чому вбивство людей за ознакою належності до певної етнічної групи стало можливим і якими методами це було здійснено.

"Ми хочемо показати, що відбувається з суспільством, коли люди припиняють боротися і, навіть, помічати зло та насильство, а також те, що геноцид – це найтяжчий злочин проти людства. Особливу увагу ми приділили темі відповідальності за геноцид, яка передбачена міжнародним правом", – цитує слова Козленка пресслужба Одеської обласної ради.

Сучасний інтерактивний простір був створений за проєктом Віталіни Вербовецької, Орини Бабенцової та Арини Гончарової – студенток Одеської академії будівництва та архітектури, які стали переможницями конкурсу на створення дизайну музею, що проводився в їх виші в грудні 2023 року.

Мультимедійні цифрові технології в експозиційному просторі цього компактного за площею музею використовуються не просто як технічна апаратура, а перетворюються на своєрідні експонати, що слугують розкриттю сценарію експозиції, підсиленню інформативності, комунікативності та атрактивності музейної експозиції, відзначають автори проєкту.

В музеї представлені роботи авторства відомих науковців, юристів-міжнародників та політичних діячів, а головні емоції на які зроблено наголос – це людське співчуття та бажання зрозуміти біль і трагедію жертв геноциду, усвідомити важливість невідворотності покарання.

На урочистому відкритті музею були присутні науковці, представники влади, духовенства та жителі міста.
