From Soviet legacy to the "Victory Museum"

The country's main memorial complex, towering over the Dnipro River, is beginning a new stage in its history. The National Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II has presented a development strategy designed to completely rethink the institution's role in the conditions of modern warfare.

The goal is 20 million for the senses

The museum has initiated a large-scale fundraising campaign of 20 million hryvnias. These funds will be used not just for renovations, but for the creation of fundamentally new modern exhibition spaces with a total area of ​​710 square meters:
- Museum of Modern Military Technologies will be dedicated to the analysis of solutions that changed the course of the Russian-Ukrainian war and established Ukraine as a global innovation hub. The exhibition will demonstrate the evolution of domestic developments: from unmanned systems and electronic warfare (EW) to digital battle management platforms, the latest shock weapons and unique engineering solutions.
- Museum of Russian (Soviet) Propaganda will become a platform for deconstructing ideological myths of the "Russian world". The legacy of totalitarian propaganda will be considered here as a tool of aggression, subject to scientific distance. This is not a denial, but a critical reflection on the history of the Memorial itself, which demonstrates the evolution of public memory from the Soviet past to modern national identity. The exhibition aims to transform the former ideological weapon into a tool for its own exposure, to deeply explore Soviet narratives that have been rooted in the Ukrainian space for decades, and to form an intellectual response to the ideology of the aggressor. While maintaining respect for the history of the creation of the Memorial Complex, the space will at the same time record the irreversible changes in the perception of the past that have occurred in Ukrainian society. Such an approach will allow turning a complex heritage into an effective means of protecting national memory.
- Mini-conference hall - a space for discussions, lectures and work with youth

The renovation will also affect the appearance of the complex. After the successful replacement of the Soviet coat of arms with a trident on the shield of the "Motherland", work continues on dismantling the remains of totalitarian symbols on the bas-reliefs and discussions are underway to rename the institution to the "Museum of the War of Independence".

Despite the ambitious plans, the museum remains one of the most visited tourist locations in Kyiv:
- Exhibition "Ukraine - Crucifixion": The world's first stationary exhibition about a full-scale invasion continues to receive foreign delegations and tourists.
- Access to observation decks: Popular climbs to the shield of the "Motherland" (height 91 meters) remain available subject to favorable security conditions.
- Open-air exhibition: An updated exhibition of modern captured Russian equipment, where each exhibit has a QR code with the history of its destruction.

The updated War Museum is becoming the main object of "dark tourism" and war memorialization in Ukraine. This is a place where international partners and journalists are primarily taken to explain the price of Ukrainian freedom in the language of the exhibits.

Головний меморіальний комплекс країни, що височіє над Дніпром, розпочинає новий етап своєї історії. Національний музей історії України у Другій світовій війні презентував стратегію розбудови, яка покликана остаточно переосмислити роль закладу в умовах сучасної війни.

Мета - 20 мільйонів на сенси

Музей ініціював великий збір коштів у розмірі 20 мільйонів гривень. Ці кошти будуть спрямовані не просто на ремонтні роботи, а на створення принципово нових сучасних експозиційних просторів загальною площею 710 квадратних метрів:
- Музей сучасних воєнних технологій буде присвячено аналізу рішень, що змінили хід російсько-української війни та закріпили за Україною статус глобального інноваційного хабу. Експозиція демонструватиме еволюцію вітчизняних розробок: від безпілотних систем та засобів радіоелектронної боротьби (РЕБ) до цифрових платформ управління боєм, новітньої ударної зброї та унікальних інженерних рішень.
- Музей російської (радянської) пропаганди стане майданчиком для деконструкції ідеологічних міфів "русского міра". Спадщина тоталітарної пропаганди розглядатиметься тут як інструмент агресії, що підлягає дослідженню з науковою дистанцією. Це не заперечення, а критичне осмислення історії самого Меморіалу, яке демонструє еволюцію суспільної пам’яті від радянського минулого до сучасної національної ідентичності. Експозиція ставить собі на меті перетворити колишню ідеологічну зброю на інструмент її ж викриття, глибоко дослідити радянські наративи, що десятиліттями вкорінювалися в українському просторі, та сформувати інтелектуальну відповідь ідеології агресора. Зберігаючи повагу до історії створення Меморіального комплексу, простір водночас фіксуватиме незворотні зміни у сприйнятті минулого, що відбулися в українському суспільстві. Такий підхід дозволить перетворити складну спадщину на дієвий засіб захисту національної пам'яті.

Оновлення торкнеться і зовнішнього вигляду комплексу. Після успішної заміни радянського герба на тризуб на щиті "Батьківщини-матері", тривають роботи по демонтажу залишків тоталітарної символіки на барельєфах та обговорення перейменування закладу на "Музей війни за незалежність".

Попри масштабні плани, музей залишається однією з найбільш відвідуваних туристичних локацій Києва:
- Виставка "Україна – розп’яття": Перша у світі стаціонарна експозиція про повномасштабне вторгнення продовжує приймати іноземні делегації та туристів.
- Доступ до оглядових майданчиків: Популярні підйоми на щит "Батьківщини-матері" (висота 91 метр) залишаються доступними за умови сприятливої безпекової ситуації.
- Експозиція просто неба: Оновлена виставка сучасної трофейної російської техніки, де кожен експонат має QR-код з історією його знищення.

Оновлений Музей війни стає головним об'єктом "темного туризму" (dark tourism) та воєнної меморіалізації в Україні. Це місце, куди в першу чергу ведуть міжнародних партнерів та журналістів, щоб мовою експонатів пояснити ціну української свободи.
