General information about Saint Michael's Cathedral (Zhytomyr)
Saint Michael's Cathedral in Zhytomyr is considered an architectural landmark of the 19th century, it is one of the oldest stone religious buildings in the city.
It was built at the expense of Zhytomyr merchant Mykhaylo Khabotin, who was later buried under the altar part of the church.
The famous pianist Svyatoslav Richter was baptized here.
Until 1927, Saint Michael's Church operated as a temple of the Ukrainian autocephalous Orthodox community, then it was closed. In Soviet times, the "Znannya" society and a puppet theater were located here.
Today it is an active church of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. In 1991, restoration began. There is an Orthodox Sunday school at the cathedral.
Свято-Михайлівський кафедральний собор у Житомирі вважається визначною пам'яткою архітектури ХІХ століття, належить до найстаріших кам'яних культових споруд міста.
Збудований коштом житомирського купця Михайла Хаботіна, який згодом був похований під вівтарною частиною церкви.
Тут був охрещений відомий піаніст Святослав Ріхтер.
До 1927 року Михайлівська церква діяла як храм української автокефальної православної громади, потім була закрита. За радянських часів тут розміщувалося товариство "Знання" та ляльковий театр.
Нині це діючий храм Православної церкви України. В 1991 році розпочалася реставрація. При соборі діє недільна православна школа.
