General information about Saint Nicholas Cathedral (Drunken Church) (Chernivtsi)
The "new" Rus (that is, Ruthenian - Ukrainian) church of Saint Nicholas was built by architects Valter Shtyubkhen-Kirkhner, Yozef Lener and Virdzhyl Ionesku, modeled on the masterpiece of Romanian medieval architecture - the mid-14th century royal church in Kurtya-de-Ardzhesh.
It is nicknamed the "drunken church" for its original "twisted" baths.
During Soviet times, the Nicholas Church remained active (it was the cathedral and the residence of the bishop), thanks to which the original interior was preserved.
It is now used by parishioners of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate.
"Нова" руська (тобто русинська - українська) церква Святого Миколая була збудована архітекторами Вальтером Штюбхен-Кірхнером, Йозефом Ленером та Вірджилом Іонеску на зразок шедевра румунського середньовічного зодчества - королівської церкви середини XIV сторіччя в Куртя-де-Арджеш.
За оригінальні "кручені" бані прозвана "п'яною церквою".
За радянських часів Миколаївська церква залишалася чинною (це був кафедральний собор та резиденція єпископа), завдяки чому зберігся самобутній інтер'єр.
Зараз використовується парафіянами УПЦ московського патріархату.
