The Cathedral Mosque of Kebir-Dzhami in Simferopol (or Ak-Mosque) is the main spiritual center of Muslims in Crimea and an architectural monument of the Crimean Khanate.
This is the oldest building in the city, which gave it its first name, Ak-Mosque ("white mosque"). The name "Kebir-Dzhami" means "cathedral".
The mosque was built in 1508 by Khan Mengli Giray, and was subsequently rebuilt several times. It acquired its current appearance in the forms of Turkish religious architecture as a result of reconstruction in 1907.
In 1930, it was closed by the Soviet authorities and used as a warehouse. After Ukraine gained Independence, it had to be restored almost from the ruins - the restoration of interiors, ornaments, Arabic painting and mehrab was completed. Now the Crimean Muftiate is located here. The mosque is functional, but open to tourists (you must take off your shoes at the entrance).
