Merefa

The city of Merefa at the confluence of the river of the same name in Mozh is located 15 kilometers northwest of Kharkiv, on the M-18 (E-105) "Kharkiv - Simferopol" highway.

Founded by Cossacks in 1595. It is believed that in 1610, Ivan Sirko, the chieftain of Kosh, was born here (a monument has been installed in the central square).

In the 17th century, an earthen fortress was built on the banks of Merefa, Merefa became the hundredth town of the Kharkiv regiment. In 1655, the first church of Saint Nicholas was built (not preserved). Until the end of the 18th century, the military settlement of Merefa was the third largest city in the Kharkiv district.

In 1896, landowner Bortkevych founded a glass factory, which remains one of the leading Ukrainian enterprises in its field. In 1911, a quarter of "Belgian houses" was built for the Belgian employees of the plant, which is now a city landmark.

In the neighboring village of Nyzhnia Ozeriana, there is a temple and a healing spring at the location of the icon of the Ozerianska Mother of God.
