Potocki Palace

Palace / manor , Architecture

The Potocki Palace in Tulchyn is a beautiful architectural ensemble, one of the best examples of classicism in Ukraine.

The manor was founded in 1757 by the Kyiv voivode Frantsishek Saleziy Potocki. After his son Stanislav Szchensnyi Potocki chose Tulchyn as his main residence, in 1782 the construction of a new palace was started according to the project of the architect Zhozef Lakrua.

The palace ensemble also includes a theater, arena, and Turkish bath. Interiors were designed by designer Merks and artist Latur. The pompous two-story palace in the palladio style is connected by oval galleries-greenhouses with two large wings. Around the palace, the English gardener Miller laid out a luxurious garden with exotic trees and shrubs, a system of ponds and canals, fountains, gazebos and sculptures.

In terms of luxury, the palace competed with the royal residences of Europe. Here Stanislav Szczensnyi Potocki received the Polish king Stanislav Avhust Ponyatovsky. Perhaps it was here that the count first met his future wife Sophia, in whose honor he later built a park in Uman, and the poet Pushkin met Potocki's daughters Sofiya and Olha, to whom he dedicated "Yevheniy Onyehin" and "Bakhchysarai Fountain".

The palace is currently occupied by the Tulchyn School of Culture. The facades of the central building have been partially restored, and the side wings are being restored. The grand staircase and stoves have been preserved in the interior.
