Zahorivsky Monastery

Historic area , Temple , Architecture

The Zahorivsky monastery near Lokachi is one of the oldest in Volyn.

According to legend, it was founded by Kyiv-Pechersk monks who escaped from the Mongol-Tatar invasion. Probably, the original red brick temple was built then, which is preserved at the base of the monastery complex. The first mention of the Zahorivsky monastery is found in documents in 1492.

The complex was completed during the 16th and 17th centuries under the Zagorovski and Czacki nobles. After 1719, the Orthodox monastery adopted the union, then became Catholic, but returned to Orthodoxy in 1824. The main church of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin in the baroque style was built in the 18th century.

In 1943, 44 UPA fighters under the command of Andriy Martsenyuk (Bereza) held a heroic defense against the German-fascist troops in the Zahorivsky monastery. Since then, the monastery buildings have been in ruins.
