State Historical and Cultural Reserve "Busha"

Historic area , Museum / gallery , Archaeological site

The State Historical and Cultural Reserve "Busha" was created in 2000 on the territory of the ancient Podillya village of Busha, located between Yampil and Mohyliv-Podilskyi. The reserve unites a whole complex of natural, archaeological, historical and cultural monuments of Eastern Podillya.

The reserve welcomes its guests with the largest open-air museum of historical sculptures in Europe, where international plein-air exhibitions of stonemason sculptors are held annually. In total, on the territory of the village, you can see about two hundred works of stone and granite on various subjects.

The key object of the reserve is Zamkova hill with the remains of the Busha Castle from Cossack times and underground passages of the 16th-17th centuries, which is a monument of cultural heritage of national importance. Remains of the settlement of the Trypllia culture were also found on the castle - a protective pavilion was built over the excavation, and the archaeological museum operates. On the slope of the mountain above the fortress there is a medieval cemetery where Cossack crosses from the 18th century have been preserved. An archaeological monument of national importance is also a cave temple of the V-XVII centuries with relief images.

The reserve includes the Ethnographic Museum, the Art Museum and the Weaving Museum. An interesting natural location is the "Haidamatsky ravine" with huge sandstone rocks in the forest massif.

The administration of the "Busha" reserve is located opposite the castle. Here you can buy tickets to the museum and order tours of the territory of the reserve. Also, in the premises of the administration, exhibitions are constantly held, master classes on baking ceremonial bread are held.

Busha Castle

Castle / fortress , Architecture , Museum / gallery

The border Busha Castle on the south-eastern border of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was built in the second half of the 16th century by crown hetman Jan Zamoyski. But it went down in history as a heroic Cossack fortress.

The castle was located on a promontory formed by the rivers Murafa and Bushanka. 4 corner castle towers were connected by underground passages. Each of the towers had its own powder cellar. Two more stone towers were part of the system of external wooden fortifications.

The castle was often attacked by Tatars. In 1617, Hetman Stanislav Zholkevskyi signed a peace treaty with the Turkish general Iskander Pasha, suspending the Polish-Turkish war for several years. In 1648 Bohdan Khmelnytsky subordinated the city to the Bratslav Regiment, the fortress was occupied by Cossack troops.

In 1654 the castle was besieged by Polish troops. According to legend, the last stage of the defense was led by the widow of Captain Dependent Maryana. When enemies stormed the city, she set fire to gunpowder cellars, destroying the fortress with an explosion along with enemies who captured it.

Only one of the fortress towers has survived, which was rebuilt in 1756 on the bell tower of the nearby Saint Michael's Church (destroyed in Soviet times). The tower has been restored, for the period of reconstruction of the church it is used as a temple.

In 2000, the Busha State Historical and Cultural Reserve was established, and archaeological research is being conducted. The Busha Defense Museum is located on the upper tier of the tower, a pavilion of Trypillya culture was opened on the territory of the castle, and an exhibition of modern sculpture was organized.

On the site of the upper settlement there is a Cossack cemetery of the XVIII-XIX centuries with massive stone crosses of various shapes.

Cave Church

Historic area , Temple , Museum / gallery , Natural object

The pre-Christian cave church in Bushа was opened by Professor Antonovych in 1883.

He discovered here a unique rock relief depicting the Peace Tree, a rooster, a deer, and a kneeling man. A mysterious rectangle is carved above these figures, which previously contained the inscription "Azm esm Miroboh priest Olhov" (now the inscription is not visible).

Various researchers date the Bushan relief to different historical periods - from the II to the XII century, and some date it to the XVI century. Perhaps the cave was used as a Christian temple. Medieval inscriptions indicate that Catholic monks lived in the cave.

In 1824, local nobleman Romuald Ovsyanyi found and explored the cave, making an inscription: "In memory of 1524. June 3. R. O." (on this day Busha was destroyed by the Tatars).

Currently, the Cave Church is part of the State Historical and Cultural Reserve "Busha". To visit, it is necessary to contact the administration of the reserve.

Chornomyn Palace (White House)

Palace / manor , Architecture

The palace of the estate of Mykola Charnomskyi, the ruler of Countess Sofiya Potoska, was built at the beginning of the 19th century under the direction of the Italian architect Francesco Boffo, who was then the chief architect of Odesa.

The house was built of London white brick, had an elevator even then, and food was brought from the kitchen through underground passages. Flanked on two sides by a double colonnade, the building's appearance and layout closely resemble the White House in Washington, D.C., depicted on the $20 bill: three stories with large windows and a semicircular colonnade. The assembly hall with ceilings over 15 meters high is similar to the Oval Office. According to one version, the architect used drawings of an American mansion.

Currently, the building houses a high school.

Martyrs for Faith Memorial (Dominican Church)

Temple , Architecture , Museum / gallery

The "Memorial of martyrs for the faith of the 20th century" was opened in Tyvriv in the church of Saint Michael the Archangel on September 1, 2018, on the 80th anniversary of the heaviest persecution for the faith of the 20th century, when all churches in Ukraine were closed. Museum expositions occupied the ground floor of the church.

The majestic church in Tyvriv once impressed travelers who came to the city along the rocky shores of the Buh. The first Catholic church of Archangel Michael was founded here back in 1569, but it was destroyed by the rebels during the War of Liberation. In 1742, Mikhal Yan Kaletynskyi, a Bratslav trumpeter, built a new church on the site of the old church, and later brought Dominican monks to Tyvri and founded a Catholic monastery next to the church. It was completed in 1760 by Zakhariy Yaroshynskyi. The decoration of the building was two pointed towers, which have not survived to this day. The two-story U-shaped body of cells covered the church with a closed square. The interior was distinguished by extraordinary splendor. The main shrine was a copy of the icon of the Czestochowa Mother of God. In 1832, the monastery was closed, the church became a parish church. During Soviet times, the monastery complex was rebuilt as a plastic products factory. Until recently, the building, disfigured by reconstruction, was abandoned. Currently, the church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Tyvriv belongs to the Catholic order of Missionaries of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, restoration is underway. In 2015, the monastery of Saint Eugene de Mazenod and the Saint John Paul II Youth Center were consecrated.

The exhibition "Memorial of Martyrs for the Faith" presents a collection of photographs, archival documents, letters, videos and audio recordings. The most valuable exhibits are the personal belongings of people who are called martyrs for the faith because they suffered during the times of atheism and were persecuted by believers.

The exposition of the "Memorial" consists of 14 locations, identified with the 14 Stations of the Cross. Each location reproduces a certain page from the life of martyrs for the faith. In one of the rooms, as an example, a synthetic image of communist reality is collected. There are even shackles, excerpts from the Criminal Code and speeches by representatives of the communist regime. Visitors can get acquainted with what the interior of the house of a believer was like, as well as anti-religious propaganda in the school at that time. Several "stands" tell about the actions of fathers who were persecuted during the times when they were in concentration camps or died. There is a location called "Cell of Death". It simulates a prison and torture chambers. At the exit from the "Memorial" is the exhibition "Life after death". It is complemented by a plaque with the symbolic inscription: "We persevered."

The exposition also tells about the history of the Church in Ukraine during the period of totalitarianism. Exhibits were collected from all over the country, but the lion's share was provided from the funds of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, priests from other parishes also participated.

The use of modern technologies - music, light, visual aids - helps visitors to more deeply experience and understand a very recent reality.

You can get to the "Memorial of Martyrs for the Faith" any day for free. The initiators of the exhibition plan to tell visitors about people who were killed or suffered torture or persecution because of their faith.

Potocki Estate

Temple , Architecture , Park / garden

A luxurious park on the banks of the Pivdenny Buh, several farm buildings and a mausoleum-tomb - all that remains of the once rich estate of the Potocki-Sveykivski in Pechera.

The park was founded at the end of the 17th century by the Moldavian voivode Heorhiy Duka, who owned Right Bank Ukraine at that time. His castle was not preserved, but later the new owners, the Potocki-Sveykivski family, took up the expansion of the park and the construction of a new palace.

The original rectangular layout of the park with a majestic four-row linden alley with 250-year-old lindens leading from the main gate to the palace is almost completely preserved. The park descends in terraces to the river and the baths, it is decorated with stone chaos, grottoes and the only park sculpture that has survived.

On the reverse side of the park is a chapel-mausoleum, built in the neo-Romanesque style according to the project of the architect Vladyslav Horodetskyi in 1904 by order of Kostyantyn and Yanyna Potocki. In Soviet times, it was used as a cinema. Today it is the church of Saint Andriy.

Several farm buildings, designed at the beginning of the 20th century by Yan Hoyrikh, have also been preserved.

The Potocki Palace was dismantled in the 1920s, and the Regional Rehabilitation Hospital was built on its foundation, which is still functioning (the "Pechera" sanatorium). The possibility of creating a tourist complex on the basis of the manor is under consideration.

Potocki Palace

Palace / manor , Architecture

The Potocki Palace in Tulchyn is a beautiful architectural ensemble, one of the best examples of classicism in Ukraine.

The manor was founded in 1757 by the Kyiv voivode Frantsishek Saleziy Potocki. After his son Stanislav Szchensnyi Potocki chose Tulchyn as his main residence, in 1782 the construction of a new palace was started according to the project of the architect Zhozef Lakrua.

The palace ensemble also includes a theater, arena, and Turkish bath. Interiors were designed by designer Merks and artist Latur. The pompous two-story palace in the palladio style is connected by oval galleries-greenhouses with two large wings. Around the palace, the English gardener Miller laid out a luxurious garden with exotic trees and shrubs, a system of ponds and canals, fountains, gazebos and sculptures.

In terms of luxury, the palace competed with the royal residences of Europe. Here Stanislav Szczensnyi Potocki received the Polish king Stanislav Avhust Ponyatovsky. Perhaps it was here that the count first met his future wife Sophia, in whose honor he later built a park in Uman, and the poet Pushkin met Potocki's daughters Sofiya and Olha, to whom he dedicated "Yevheniy Onyehin" and "Bakhchysarai Fountain".

The palace is currently occupied by the Tulchyn School of Culture. The facades of the central building have been partially restored, and the side wings are being restored. The grand staircase and stoves have been preserved in the interior.

Saint Joseph the Betrothed Church

Temple , Architecture

The parish church of Saint Joseph the Betrothed was founded in Nemyriv in the 18th century.

In 1805, after the wooden temple burned down, the church was rebuilt in stone at the expense of Count Stanislav Potoski. Its two huge symmetrical towers on the facade dominated the urban development.

During Soviet times, the temple was closed and rebuilt as a cultural center with a hall for ceremonial events, completely losing its original appearance.

In 1995, the Church of Saint Joseph was returned to the Roman Catholic community of Nemyriv. After reconstruction in 1999, it was consecrated again.

Water Mill

Architecture

The old water mill on the rapids of the Pivdennyi Buh river is located between the villages of Sokilets and Pechera.

The elegant four-story industrial building was built by German craftsmen according to the project of the architect Yan Hoyrikh at the end of the 19th century, when Count Kostyantyn Potoski owned these lands. The walls are made of crushed stone and red brick, the metal decor and some of the old equipment have been preserved. There is a stone warehouse building nearby, and on the opposite bank of the canal - a granary.

In 1951, the Sokilets mill was rebuilt as a hydroelectric power station and an oil factory. The power plant burned down in 1992.

Currently, there is a project to restore the hydroelectric plant, as well as an alternative project to create a hotel-tourist and recreation complex.

In 2007-2010, the Potoski mill served as a venue for the ethno-rock festival "Mlynomaniya", which is now held on the opposite bank of the river.

Academician Danylo Zabolotny Museum-Manor

Museum / gallery , Palace / manor

The memorial museum of Academician Danylo Zabolotny was founded in 1929 in his native village of Chobotarka (now Zabolotne) in Vinnytsia Region, where he was born, lived and was buried.

An outstanding microbiologist and epidemiologist, academician Danylo Zabolotny founded the world's first department of epidemiology in Odesa, as well as the Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology in Kyiv. In his native house under a thatched roof, the original interior has been completely preserved: a cabinet with the scientist's books, a Zeissian microscope with which he traveled through the deserts of Asia, an old straw block on a hanger. An exposition with wax figures in one of the rooms reproduces the scene of Zabolotny receiving a local patient during his stay in his native village.

On the territory of the manor, a summer kitchen has been recreated and a separate exhibition house has been built, where you can see a large-scale diorama "Danylo Zabolotny on an expedition to fight the plague", which reproduces one of the episodes of the scientist's work in Manchuria. Returning from expeditions, Zabolotny always brought exotic plants with him. The Carpathian birch planted by him, an Ussuri maple and a large dogwood bush still grow in the garden near the house.

Not far from the house is the grave of Danylo Kyrylovych with a tombstone in the style of constructivism by the artist Vasyl Krychevskyi.

The manor-museum of academician Zabolotny is part of the structure of the Institute of Microbiology and Virology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
