Mykhaylo Kotsyubynsky Literary Memorial Museum

Museum / gallery

The Literary and Memorial Museum of Mykhaylo Kotsyubynsky was opened in Vinnytsia in the house where the future writer was born and lived until he was 33 years old.

The estate was built by his grandfather Maksym Abaza at the beginning of the XIX century, having acquired land on the outskirts of Vinnytsia, in Zamostia.

In 1926, on the initiative of the writer's brother, a restoration was carried out and a museum was established. The exposition is built on a monographic principle and is located in five rooms of Kotsyubynsky's parents' house. The exhibits (lifetime editions, translations, paintings) consistently reveal the writer's creative path and his public activities.

Mykola Pyrohov National Museum-Estate

Palace / manor , Museum / gallery

The National Museum-Estate of Mykola Pyrohov is located in a picturesque park on the shore of a lake on the southwestern outskirts of Vinnytsia. It was opened in 1947 in the "Vyshnya" estate, where during the last 20 years of his life the outstanding scientist, surgeon, creator of military field surgery Mykola Pyrohov lived and worked.

Pyrohov purchased the "Vyshnya" estate from the heirs of the doctor of medicine Hrykolevskyi in 1859. He organized the abandoned farm, built a new house and pharmacy, planted an orchard. Here Pyrohov received patients and performed complex surgical operations.

The museum's main exhibition about Pyrogov's life and activities is housed in a one-and-a-half-story manor house. In particular, the interior of the office with the furniture of those times has been recreated. Personal belongings of the scientist, awards, books, surgical instruments, photos of family members are presented.

Nearby is a pharmacy museum with the interiors of the reception and operating room. The main elements of the exposition are the figures of the pharmacist, paramedic, patients and Mykola Pyrohov himself. The exposition also contains ancient scales, copies of prescription forms, textbooks on pharmacology.

The estate is located on the territory of a memorial park with an area of 6 hectares. Its decoration is an age-old linden alley, which was Mykola Pyrohov's favorite place for walks. Two huge fir trees, planted in 1862 by Pyrohov himself, have been preserved.

1.5 kilometers from the estate, in the former village of Sheremetka, there is the Nicholas Church-mausoleum, where the embalmed body of Pyrohov is kept. The initiator of the embalming was his wife - Oleksandra Pyrohova. The body was placed in a crypt, over which a church was built in 1882–1885 according to the project of architect Viktor Sychuhov. Today, the church-necropolis is a historical monument of national significance.

Nativity of Blessed Virgin

Temple , Architecture

The wooden church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, perched on a high mountain above the Pivdenny Buh, welcomes everyone who enters the Pechera from the Nemyriv side.

It is located on a large, strategically advantageous plateau, under which are hidden the ancient caves that gave the village its name. It was here, on the site of an ancient Rus settlement, that in the 17th century, the Moldavian lord Duka, who was appointed by the Turkish sultan as the ruler of Right Bank Ukraine, built his castle in the 17th century. After the expulsion of Duka, who was famous for cruelty, from Ukraine in 1764, the castle was dismantled into building materials, which were used to build the foundation and fence of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin. The later belfry was probably built on the base of one of the defensive towers.

From the plateau in front of the church, a breathtaking panorama of the Pivdenny Buh valley with a cascade of rapids opens.

Palace of Princess Mariya Shcherbatova

Palace / manor , Architecture

The palace of Princess Mariya Shcherbatova in Nemyriv was built in the 19th and 20th centuries on the site of a medieval castle and a later estate of the Potocki magnates.

Princess Shcherbatova inherited the Nemyriv estate from her grandfather, Count Boleslav Potocki. On her order, the Czech architect Yirzhi Stibral, with the participation of Henrikh Hryunder and Emanu el Kramarzh, built a two-story palace in the neoclassical style.

Around the palace, the Belgian park builder Van Heert laid out a large park with an area of 85 hectares, which now includes more than 160 species of trees and shrubs: oak, common, black and Weymouth pine, red beech, white acacia, common and blue spruce, hornbeam, fir tree, ginkgo, sycamore and others.

The park facade of the palace is guarded by two sculptures of sleeping lions. Only a square water tower in the medieval style remained from the old manor buildings.

During the First World War, Princess Shcherbatova set up an infirmary in the palace, where she herself worked as a sister of mercy. She died during the Soviet-Ukrainian war from an accidental shot by a Red Army marauder.

Now the palace is home to the "Avangard" sanatorium, but visitors can freely admire the well-preserved interiors. The walls are decorated with paintings by Ukrainian masters from the collection of the former hostess. In the main hall, a portrait of the princess herself hangs in a place of honor.

Recently, a small museum of the history of the palace and the Shcherbatova-Strohanov family was opened in the premises of the palace. Three museum rooms contain an authentic collection of household items from the period of Princess Mariya Shcherbatova and paintings.

Potocki Estate

Temple , Architecture , Park / garden

A luxurious park on the banks of the Pivdenny Buh, several farm buildings and a mausoleum-tomb - all that remains of the once rich estate of the Potocki-Sveykivski in Pechera.

The park was founded at the end of the 17th century by the Moldavian voivode Heorhiy Duka, who owned Right Bank Ukraine at that time. His castle was not preserved, but later the new owners, the Potocki-Sveykivski family, took up the expansion of the park and the construction of a new palace.

The original rectangular layout of the park with a majestic four-row linden alley with 250-year-old lindens leading from the main gate to the palace is almost completely preserved. The park descends in terraces to the river and the baths, it is decorated with stone chaos, grottoes and the only park sculpture that has survived.

On the reverse side of the park is a chapel-mausoleum, built in the neo-Romanesque style according to the project of the architect Vladyslav Horodetskyi in 1904 by order of Kostyantyn and Yanyna Potocki. In Soviet times, it was used as a cinema. Today it is the church of Saint Andriy.

Several farm buildings, designed at the beginning of the 20th century by Yan Hoyrikh, have also been preserved.

The Potocki Palace was dismantled in the 1920s, and the Regional Rehabilitation Hospital was built on its foundation, which is still functioning (the "Pechera" sanatorium). The possibility of creating a tourist complex on the basis of the manor is under consideration.

Potocki Palace

Palace / manor , Architecture

The Potocki Palace in Tulchyn is a beautiful architectural ensemble, one of the best examples of classicism in Ukraine.

The manor was founded in 1757 by the Kyiv voivode Frantsishek Saleziy Potocki. After his son Stanislav Szchensnyi Potocki chose Tulchyn as his main residence, in 1782 the construction of a new palace was started according to the project of the architect Zhozef Lakrua.

The palace ensemble also includes a theater, arena, and Turkish bath. Interiors were designed by designer Merks and artist Latur. The pompous two-story palace in the palladio style is connected by oval galleries-greenhouses with two large wings. Around the palace, the English gardener Miller laid out a luxurious garden with exotic trees and shrubs, a system of ponds and canals, fountains, gazebos and sculptures.

In terms of luxury, the palace competed with the royal residences of Europe. Here Stanislav Szczensnyi Potocki received the Polish king Stanislav Avhust Ponyatovsky. Perhaps it was here that the count first met his future wife Sophia, in whose honor he later built a park in Uman, and the poet Pushkin met Potocki's daughters Sofiya and Olha, to whom he dedicated "Yevheniy Onyehin" and "Bakhchysarai Fountain".

The palace is currently occupied by the Tulchyn School of Culture. The facades of the central building have been partially restored, and the side wings are being restored. The grand staircase and stoves have been preserved in the interior.

Saint Anna's Church

Temple , Architecture

The Church of Saint Anne was built in Bar for the Dominican order in 1811, although its foundation dates back to the time of Queen Bona.

According to some data, it was founded back in 1550 and bore the name of Saint Nicholas.

In 1768, under its vaults, representatives of the Polish nobility, led by the Bishop of Kamyanets, Adam Stanislav Krasinsky, announced the creation of the Bar Confederation - a military-political union to protect the nobility from the pressures of the Polish king and fight for Poland's independence from the Russian Empire, which gave impetus to the Koliiv region and actually led to the first division of Poland.

In its current form, the church of Saint Anna was rebuilt in 1902-1908. A beautiful example of Neo-Gothic.

In 1933-1942, the church was closed twice. Now it is valid again.

Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki Church

Temple , Architecture

The Church of Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki in Kukavka is famous for the participation in its creation of the famous portrait artist Vasyl Tropinin.

The Saint Demetrius Church was built in 1806 at the expense of Count Irakliy Morkov, who then owned these lands. Tropinin was a serf of Count Morkov. From 1804 to 1821 (with breaks) he lived in Kukavka, where, in particular, he designed and painted the church of Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki.

In Soviet times, the murals were painted over, later restored, most of them were taken to museums in Kyiv and Vinnytsia. According to some sources, Tropinin painted the icons "Removal of the Savior from the Cross" and "Four Evangelists" on the walls of the church, as well as individual images in the iconostasis.

Until 1991, the Vasyl Tropinin museum was located in the Saint Demetrius church, which after the return of the church to the faithful moved to the cultural center.

A monument to Vasyl Tropinin by the sculptor Mykola Kryzhanivskyi was erected in front of the church in Kukavka.

Saint Joseph the Betrothed Church

Temple , Architecture

The parish church of Saint Joseph the Betrothed was founded in Nemyriv in the 18th century.

In 1805, after the wooden temple burned down, the church was rebuilt in stone at the expense of Count Stanislav Potoski. Its two huge symmetrical towers on the facade dominated the urban development.

During Soviet times, the temple was closed and rebuilt as a cultural center with a hall for ceremonial events, completely losing its original appearance.

In 1995, the Church of Saint Joseph was returned to the Roman Catholic community of Nemyriv. After reconstruction in 1999, it was consecrated again.

Saint Nicholas Church

Temple , Architecture

The wooden church of Saint Nicholas in Vinnytsia with a bell tower on a huge stone foundation is one of the best examples of the Podillya school of wooden folk architecture.

In 1746, a place was chosen for the construction of the Saint Nicholas Church on the opposite bank of the Pivdeniy Buh from the central part of the city, on the territory of the Old Town, at the foot of the mountain where the old Vinnytsia castle once stood.

The temple is distinguished by archaic architectural elements - hewn walls and vaulted galleries resting on pillars. The belfry, placed on the corner of the granite retaining wall, could serve as a tower from which two walls of the fortification could be shot through in the event of an enemy attack.

In Soviet times, the premises of the Saint Nicholas Church housed a museum of local history. In 1970, restoration was carried out.
