Nativity of Holy Virgin Church

Temple

The Church of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin in the village of Horokholyn Lis was built in 2008 on the site of the burnt-out wooden church of the Assumption of the Virgin, founded in 1943.

The old Assumption Church, which was transformed by the communists into a museum of atheism, became famous due to the fact that it served as the scenery for the location filming of the movie "Viy" based on the mystical novel by Mykola Hohol (it can be seen in the scene of the funeral procession). In 2006, the church burned down. According to the official version, the fire was caused by a violation of the rules for the installation and operation of the electrical network, however, local residents believe that the old church was defiled by the filming of a film about evil spirits (a similar fate befell another church, where "Viy" was also filmed - in Sedniv, Chernihiv Region).

Perhaps that is why they decided not to restore the wooden church that burned down in its original form, but instead built a new church of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin made of red brick.

Nativity of Most Holy Virgin Church

Temple , Architecture

The Defense Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Virgin is the oldest building in the city of Rohatyn.

It was founded during the times of the Galicia-Volyn principality - no later than the 14th-15th centuries, and possibly even earlier. During the Tatar raids, the temple served as a small fortress, as evidenced by the defensive walls.

The church burned down three times and was rebuilt with some changes, as a result of which Gothic and Baroque elements were intertwined in the architectural form.

During Soviet times, the Church of the Nativity remained active. It was damaged during the Second World War, but in 1955 the restored temple was consecrated. A little later, the iconostasis was restored.

Nativity of Virgin Church

Temple , Architecture

The Greek-Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin is located in the historical district of Tysmenytsia, which is called "Monastery".

The wooden monastery church in the Hutsul style was built in 1736. Nearby is a three-tiered wooden belfry (XVIII century). The type of the cross-domed church repeats the plan and structure of the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross (1681) of the Manyava Skete, which legend connects with the main temple of the Spaso-Mizhhirsky Monastery near Kyiv.

A Baroque-Renaissance iconostasis has been preserved, which some researchers attribute to the time of the foundation of the temple.

Oleksa Dovbush Historical and Memorial Museum

Museum / gallery

The historical and memorial museum of Oleksa Dovbush in Ivano-Frankivsk was created in 1995 on the basis of the private collection of the famous historian Volodymyr Hrabovetsky, who for 50 years studied the Carpathian insurgent movement of opryshki of the 16th–19th centuries and the life of the legendary hero Oleksa Dovbush, a noble robber and people's avenger, who fought for the liberation of the enslaved peasantry.

The small museum exposition consists mainly of documents and paintings, as well as some ethnographic materials.

The most interesting exhibit is the legendary ax of Dovbush, which was kept for two centuries by the descendants of witnesses to the death of the robber in the village of Kosmach.

Pohonia Monastery of Assumption of Mother of God

Temple , Architecture

The Pohonia Monastery of the Assumption of the Mother of God in the village of Pohonia near Tysmenytsia is one of the great centers of Greek Catholic pilgrimage.

Here, in a small wooden church, there is a miraculous icon of the Mother of God Pohonska.

According to legend, in the 13th century, voivode Roman (perhaps the son of Danylo Halytskyi) with a small detachment defeated the army of Khan Baty here. According to legend, on the eve of the battle, Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker appeared to the voivode in a dream and ordered him not to defend himself, but to boldly attack the Tatars. On the site of Roman's victory over the Mongol-Tatars in 1634, the Church of the Assumption of the Holy Theotokos was built, and on the spot where the voivode had a dream, the Church of Saint Nicholas was built.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a new church and monastery of the Assumption of the Mother of God was built, but already in 1946 it was liquidated by the Soviet authorities. A boarding school for children with mental disorders was placed within the walls, and the church was destroyed in 1950.

The miraculous icon was preserved. In 1991, the monastery was revived. Hundreds and sometimes thousands of pilgrims flock here on holidays.

Potoski Palace

Castle / fortress , Palace / manor , Architecture

The fortified palace-castle in Stanislaviv (Ivano-Frankivsk) was founded in 1672 by the founder of the city, the Halician mayor Andryi Potoski, as his residence and the citadel of the Stanislaviv fortress. Before that, the wooden hunting castle of his father Stanislav "Revera" Potoski served as a residence.

The first stage of construction was managed by the architect Fransua Korassini, and after 1679 by the architect Sharl Benua. The castle consisted of a three-story palace surrounded by defensive ramparts and bastions, side service buildings and a park in the center of the castle yard. Only the front palace fence, which separated the castle from the city, with an entrance gate decorated with knightly symbols, was well preserved.

Polish King Yan III Sobeskyi, Transylvanian Prince Ferents II Rakotsi and others visited the Potoski Palace.

Until now, the main complex of buildings has lost its original appearance, as it has been repeatedly rebuilt and adapted to the needs of various military departments. Until 2004, a military hospital was located on the territory. Until recently, the complex was privately owned.

Currently, an initiative group of citizens has created a charity fund "Space of Innovative Creations "Palace", which attracts grant funds for the restoration of the historical monument, the creation of a museum and exhibition complex is planned. Art events, performances and other events are already held on the orderly territory of the ancient residence. In 2013 The restoration of the entrance gate was completed in 2008, which returned to its authentic appearance.

On the opposite side, you can see the remains of ramparts and bastions, on one of which the Ascension monument with a 3-meter sculpture of Jesus Christ (2001) is installed.

Princely Well

Historic area

The healing spring on the slope of Krylos Hill near the Assumption Cathedral is called the Princely Well in Krylos.

Since ancient times, it served as a source of drinking water for the inhabitants of ancient Halych. According to legend, the spring arose from the blow of the prince's sword during a long siege, providing drink to the desperate defenders of the city.

For the 1100th anniversary of ancient Halych, a four-meter rotunda with a copper dome and a gilded cross was installed above the spring. There is also an observation deck.

Saint Nicholas and Anna Church

Temple , Architecture

The monumental building of the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Nicholas and Anna was built in the very center of Rohatyn in the 15th century on the site of a wooden temple.

It combines Gothic and Renaissance features in its architectural form. The loopholes on the 42-meter-high belfry testify to the defensive nature of the structure - it repeatedly played the role of a fortress tower during the attacks of the Turks and Tatars in the 17th century. A women's monastery and a hospital functioned at the church.

The building was damaged during the Second World War, in the 1970s it was converted into a furniture warehouse, then a local history museum. During the years of independence, the church was returned to the Catholic community, restored and consecrated as the Church of Saint Nicholas and Anna.

A monument to the legendary Roksolana has been erected on the Rynok Square in front of the church.

Saint Nicholas Church

Temple , Architecture

The defense church of Saint Nicholas in Chesnyky (according to other sources - Ascension Church) is a unique stone cult building, built according to the traditions of Ukrainian wooden architecture.

Saint Nicholas Church was built in the 14th century (some researchers assume that in the 12th-13th centuries). It also served as a fortress in which local residents defended themselves from the Tatars.

The church is three-part, with a rectangular nave, framed on two sides by a square nave and a faceted pentagonal apse. Each of the three volumes of the temple is covered by a hemispherical dome hidden under a wooden roof - shingles. In the 19th century, the northern and southern facades were strengthened with powerful buttresses.

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Chesnyky is an architectural monument of national importance. Its analogue is found only in the village of Rosokhy, Lviv region.
