Mariya Zankovetska Literary and Memorial House-Museum of

Palace / manor , Museum / gallery

The Literary Memorial House-Museum of the outstanding Ukrainian actress, the first People's Artist of Ukraine Mariya Zankovetska tells about the life and work of the representative of the luminaries of the National Ukrainian Theater of the late XIX - early XX centuries.

Zankovetska spent the last years of her life in Kyiv, living in the house of her sister Lidiya Karnaukhova. The first museum was organized in 1960. In 1980, the original architectural monument was destroyed, but 9 years later the house was restored to its original form and opened a renovated museum.

The historical and biographical part of the exposition presents manuscripts, photographs, play posters, stage costumes and personal belongings of the actress.

The memorial part recreates the interior of Mariya Zankovetskaya's apartment, which consisted of three rooms: an office, a living room, a dining room, and a kitchen. The rooms are mostly furniture and things that belonged to the hostess.

On the ground floor there is a museum living room and an exhibition hall.

Mary Magdalene Church

Architecture , Temple

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Tarashcha was built in the 1890s in the pseudo-Gothic style.

The construction of the church began in 1886. Count Branytsky collected money for it. An organ was installed in the church, the pointed windows were decorated with stained glass.

During the time of the Soviet authorities, they intended to open a pasta factory in the premises, but this was prevented by the Second World War. During the German occupation, the church became an Orthodox temple, and in the 1960s it was divided into 2 floors, making small classrooms on the first floor, and a large assembly hall on the second floor - the church became a music school.

Currently, the Church of Mary Magdalene is one of the decorations of Tarascha, it still houses the Tarascha Music School named after Mykola Lysenko. You can come in and inspect the premises during working hours.

Maydan Knyazhyi dvir

Historic area

Maydan Knyazhyi dvir (princely court) is located in the center of the ancient Pereyaslav. Princes of Pereyaslav lived here, state affairs were decided, the princely army was gathered, from here they set off against the enemy and returned here victorious.

In princely times, the area of the entire city center reached 2.5 hectares. The princely court (Knyazhyi dvir) occupied its northern part and was bounded from the east by the central street connecting the princely and episcopal gates, from the north and west by a defensive rampart, and from the south by a transverse street that departed from the city center.

It was at this place in 1654 that the Pereyaslavska Rada was held - the general military council of the leaders of the Ukrainian Cossacks, at which Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, before the Moscow embassy of the boyar Vasyl Buturlin, took an oath of loyalty to Tsar Oleksiy Mykhaylovych, the result of which was the conclusion of an agreement on a military-political union between Ukraine and by Muscovy.

On the square is the Cathedral of the Dormition, where the Cossack foreman was sworn in. Ukraine was under the protectorate of the Muscovite Empire. The process of curtailing the autonomy of the Cossack state and the complete absorption of Ukraine by the Muscovite state, which later became the Russian Empire, soon began.

In honor of the anniversary of those events in Soviet times, the square in front of the Cathedral of the Dormition was named "Pereyaslavska Rada Square". On September 26, 2019, by the decision of the city council session, Pereyaslavska Rada Square was renamed Maydan Knyazhyi dvir.

Maydan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square)

Historic area

Maydan Nezalezhnosti is the central square of Kyiv, a symbol of freedom. The main events of the struggle for Ukraine's independence in 1990-1991, the "Orange Revolution" in 2004, and the "Revolution of Dignity" (Euromaydan) in 2013-2014 took place here.

The square began to take shape only in the 19th century (it used to be a wasteland), and already in 1876, when the City Duma moved here, the square was called Dumska. After the war, it was rebuilt, called Kalinin Square, then - October Revolution Square (the central element was a monument to Lenin, removed from the pedestal in 1991). One of the symbols is the electronic scoreboard on the tower of the House of Trade Unions.

The panorama of the square opens from the hill, where the former building of the Institute of Noble Girls (1843) is located, which later served as the premises of the NKVD, then the Palace of Congresses.

In 2000-2001, the square was thoroughly reconstructed (the "roulette" disappeared - the famous Kyiv fountain, which was a traditional meeting place). A series of new monuments appeared: Independence Monument, Lyad Gate, Monument to the Founders of Kyiv, Kozak Mamai and others. The "Globus" shopping complex was built in the underground part, which now adjoins the "pipe" - an underground passage where "informals" of all stripes gather.

Projects for the reconstruction of the Maydan and the creation of a memorial to the heroes of the "Heavenly Hundred" who died during the protests in January-February 2014 are being discussed.

Memorial "Bukryn bridgehead" (Chuchyn Settlement)

Monument

The memorial in honor of the heroes of the military offensive operation "Bukryn bridgehead" (1943), built on the site of the ancient Rus settlement of Chuchyn, which was first mentioned in chronicles in the 11th century.

In princely times, there was a fortress here that controlled the surroundings, and a port on the Dnipro. Remains of shafts up to 4 meters high have been preserved, partial reconstruction has been carried out. A monument to Boyan - the author of "Words about Igor's campaign" was erected.

In 1943, during the operation to liberate Kyiv, the Soviet troops, at the cost of terrible losses, forced the Dnipro in this area and captured an 11-kilometer bridgehead, twice tried to launch an attack on Kyiv, but failed both times. The conditions of the terrain, which complicated the offensive actions of the troops, especially the tank army, were not taken into account. Losses in manpower were colossal.

According to the most modest estimates, 250 thousand soldiers of the Soviet Army died. This episode is considered one of the bloodiest in the entire Second World War.

Mikhail Bulhakov Museum

Museum / gallery

The Literature-Memorial Museum to Mikhail Bulhakov was opened in the so-called "Turbiny House", where the writer lived from 1906 to 1919 and where he "settled" the heroes of the novel "White Guard".

The interiors of the rooms are reproduced in the form in which they are reflected in Bulhakov's photographs and descriptions: a grand living room with a piano, a medical office, a room for the writer's sister Varya, as well as a room for Bulhakov himself and the hero of Mykolka's novel. apartment N50 from the novel "The Master and Marharita". The effect of the "fifth dimension" is especially impressive - from the dining room through the mirror you can see the room where Oleksiy Turbin died, and in real life - Bulhakov's father.

The exposition presents many Bulhakov's relics collected by the writer's relatives and enthusiasts.

Military History Museum

Museum / gallery

The exemplary military-historical museum of the village of Trypillia was opened in 2001 in the premises of the Trypillia Lyceum as a museum of military glory.

The main exposition tells about the events that took place in the village and its surroundings during the Second World War, and about the villagers who defended their homeland from the invaders. In particular, materials are presented about the "Rozkopana" tract, which is popularly called "Obuhiv's Babyn Yar", where the Nazis shot more than 700 civilians on the night of July 1, 1943.

An improvised soldier's trench has been set up in the hall, which stores the remains of weapons that were found on the battlefields in the vicinity of the village.

Separate stands tell about the citizens of Trypillia who took part in the war in Afghanistan and in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant.

The "Russian-Ukrainian War" section is constantly replenished with new exhibits. Here you can learn about the residents of the village who have been defending Ukraine at the front since 2014, as well as about the work of the volunteer staff of the Trypillia Lyceum and other local volunteer organizations.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine

Architecture

The pompous building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on Mykhaylivska Square in Kyiv appeared in 1938 on the site of the ancient Church of the Three Saints.

It was the first building of the government complex of the capital of the Ukrainian SSR, which was planned to be built on the space from Mykhaylivska to Sofiyivska Square. In 1934, the Saint Michael's Gold-Domed Cathedral was demolished to clear the space under the Government Square, and the demolition of Saint Sophia of Kyiv was planned.

The first building for the Central Committee of the CP(b)U was built according to the project of the Leningrad architect Yosyp Lanhbard. The second twin building was to be built on the site of Saint Michael's Cathedral. A giant monument to Lenin was supposed to be placed between them. The implementation of these barbaric plans was prevented by the war. The Germans did not use the building. After the war, it again housed the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine.

Currently, it is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

Monument "Naked Attack"

Monument

The sculptural composition "Naked Attack" was installed in the village of Mala Vilshanka during the Soviet era in memory of the textbook propaganda Soviet history, which tells about the heroism of the Red Army men Hryhoriy Kotovsky.

Kotovsky once stood with his headquarters in nearby Volodarka, and the musicians of his orchestra were invited to Vilshanka to play at a wedding. In the morning, it became known that the White Guards were approaching Vilshanka, and the musicians, having abandoned their instruments, fled to their relatives in Volodarka. After learning that all the instruments, including his favorite drums, had fallen to the enemy, Kotovsky immediately ordered the signal for battle to be sounded. The fighters jumped out of bed, who was wearing what, got on their horses and rushed to rescue the drums. True, there were no White Guards in Vilshanka at that time, but the "naked attack" made an indelible impression on local residents.

Monument to Bohdan Khmelnitsky

Monument

The monument to Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi is one of the oldest and most outstanding city monuments, a business card of Kyiv.

The idea of its installation belongs to professor Mykhaylo Maksymovych, historian Mykola Kostomarov, poet Mykhaylo Yuzefovych and artist Mykhaylo Mykeshin, who convinced Tsar Oleksandr II to start collecting donations for the monument "to the one who returned the Kiev shrine to the Rus people, who saved, perhaps, Orthodoxy on the banks of the Dnipro".

The multi-figure composition of the monument conceived by Mykeshin had to be greatly simplified for financial and political reasons, excluding anti-Polish and anti-Semitic elements. The idea was embodied in bronze by St. Petersburg sculptors Pius Velionskyi and Artemiy Ober.

The city authorities decided to place the monument on Sofiyivska Square, where in 1648 the people of Kyiv met the Cossack regiments led by Khmelnitsky, who entered the city after the victory over the Polish nobility. Eight years were spent on disputes about the place of installation and placement of the monument, as a result of which the hetman began to "threaten" with his mace not Warsaw, but somewhere in the direction of Moscow. Only in 1886, the architect Volodymyr Mykolayiv began the construction of a pedestal from granite blocks that remained after the construction of the pillars of the Lantsyuhovy Bridge.

The opening of the monument took place on the day of the 900th anniversary of the baptism of Rus.

After the Soviet-Ukrainian war, the inscriptions on the pedestal "We want an Eastern, Orthodox tsar" and "Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, one indivisible Russia" were replaced by one laconic one: "Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. 1888."

Since that time, the square around the monument has repeatedly become the scene of important social and political events, both in the revolutionary times of the beginning of the 20th century and now - usually, rallies and demonstrations of national patriots are held here.
