Dnipro Academic Theater of Drama and Comedy

Architecture , Theater / show

The Dnipro Academic Theater of Drama and Comedy is located in the premises of the former Winter Theater of Katerynoslav, built in 1906-1907 in the Art Nouveau style according to the project of architect Fedir Bulatsel.

In 1927, based on the decision of the executive committee of the city council, a theater of Russian drama was created on the basis of the troupe of the Moscow Maly Theater, which was touring in the city at that time.

Before the Second World War, the theater building was reconstructed and took on more classical forms - the facade was decorated with columns, pilasters and sculptural images of art muses.

Dnipro History Museum (Governor's House)

Architecture

The "Governor's House" in Dnipro is a very beautiful and unusual for the Dnipro region Neo-Gothic style building on the corner of Dmytro Yavornytskyi Avenue and Voskresenska Street, which is an architectural monument of national importance. Now it houses the Dnipro History Museum.

The building was erected in 1840-1850 as the mansion of Major Hryhoriy Shcherbakov. From the middle of the 19th century, it housed the English Club. From 1887 until the Bolshevik coup, the governors of Katerinoslav lived there. And although in Soviet times the Council of Deputies and the Dnipro Palace of Pioneers were located here, the building continued to be unofficially called the "Governor's House".

In 1997, the "Governor's House" was purchased by "PrivatBank" and reconstructed into an office, which became a guarantee of the preservation of the building. In 2021, the first exhibition of the Dnipro History Museum was opened here.

The modern interactive exhibition of the museum tells about the founding and development of the city in the 18th - 20th centuries, social and cultural life, the history of trade and banking in the city, etc. Archaeological finds from Katerynoslav-Kilchenskyi, samples of bricks, roof tiles and tiles produced in Katerynoslav, documents about urban development and many others are presented. The interior of a city living room of the 1960s has been reconstructed. In the hall "Dnieper, bridges, rapids" you can learn about Dnieper crossings and pilotage on the rapids of the Dnieper from the time of the Cossacks to the present day.

Multimedia equipment is widely used in the exposition: interactive information panels, projection screens, QR codes, audio guides. The museum is adapted for visiting people with disabilities (internal portable ramp, mnemonic diagram, excursion materials in Braille). Inclusive tours and tactile exhibitions are held.

The current building of the Dnipro State Circus, stylized as a tent, was built in 1980 according to the project of Pavlo Nirinberg. The building is distinguished by an original pattern of a dome vault, which makes it possible to conveniently attach the suspension of artists' devices and creates excellent acoustics.

For the first time in domestic practice, during the construction of the Dnipro Circus, a tent covering made of prefabricated reinforced concrete elements was used. The hall is equipped with the latest light and sound equipment.

The Dnipro State Circus is the only circus in Ukraine with a rehearsal and stage arena. The capacity of the audience hall is 1914 people.

Potemkin Palace (Students Palace of Culture)

Palace / manor , Architecture

Potemkin Palace is one of the first and most significant buildings of Dnipro, the former Katerynoslav.

The exact date of the building has not been established - construction was carried out between 1786 and 1790. Most likely, the laying took place in 1787-1788, after the construction of the Transfiguration Cathedral began.

The authorship of the project of the large-scale palace in the style of classicism, built for the founder of the city, the governor-general of the Novorossiysk region, Prince Hrihoriy Potemkin-Tavriyskyi, is attributed to the outstanding Russian architect Ivan Starov. Originally, the main building contained a number of ceremonial rooms, including a huge bicolor hall in the central part.

It is believed that Potemkin himself never visited his Katerynoslav palace. After his death, the building stood in desolation for a long time, in 1837 it was reconstructed as a house of noble meetings. In 1952, the completely rebuilt building became the Students Palace of Culture.

According to legend, an underground passage was laid from the basement of the Potemkin Palace to the bank of the Dnipro, in which a person of his entire height could move freely.

Dnipro Embankment

Historic area

The Dnipro embankment is considered the longest in Europe. Its total length is more than 23 kilometers.

It consists of three streets: Zavodska Naberezhna, Sicheslavska Naberezhna and Peremohy Naberezhna. The arrangement of the territory along the Dnipro River, the construction of the embankment and the boulevard in the Dnipro began in the late 1950s. Production waste (slag) from the Dnipro Metallurgical Plant was used to build the dam. Outside, the embankment was lined with granite. The parapet is assembled from cast-iron grid links fixed between granite blocks. Construction continued until the early 1970s.

Today it is a favorite place for local residents to walk, one of the city's hallmarks. There are many monuments, sculptures, cafes and restaurants here. One of the novelties is the "White Swan" fountain. The longest 50-meter "family" bench in Ukraine is located in the free Wi-Fi zone. Sicheslavska Embankment is especially beautiful in the evening illumination.

Monastyrskyi Island

Historic area

Monastyrskyi Island is the historical core of the Dnipro River, a favorite recreation spot of the townspeople. A pedestrian bridge across a branch of the Dnipro River was thrown from Taras Shevchenko Park to the island.

According to legend, in the 11th century there was a Byzantine monastery here, where Princess Olha stayed on the stormy road to Constantinople. A memorial cross was erected in honor of the Byzantine monks, the Nicholas Church was built on the cape (1999).

During Soviet times, a monument to Taras Shevchenko was erected, a zoo and an aquarium, as well as a children's amusement park, were opened.

In 2013, the 17-meter decorative waterfall "Porih Revuchy" was opened, which symbolizes the flooded cascade of the Dnipro rapids (it works during the summer period on weekends, and in the evening - on weekdays).

Assumption of Holy Virgin Mary Church

Temple

The Church of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary in Novoselivka was founded in 1780.

The wooden temple served the parishioners properly until the 1930s, then it was closed by the Bolsheviks. Divine services were restored during the Second World War. The church operated until 1960, then it was closed again, and the building was equipped with a gym, then a warehouse. In 1981, the village council decided to destroy the church building: the wooden structure was broken with difficulty, and the granite plinth and foundation could not be destroyed even with a bulldozer.

In 1985, a small church in the name of Archangel Gabriel was built on the foundation. In 2003, a place was consecrated for the construction of a new temple, the construction of the walls of which was completed in 2008. Soon, the first divine service was held in the lower church of the Assumption Church.
