Sharhorod Castle

Castle / fortress

The remains of the fortifications of the Sharhorod castle, built in 1585 by the prince Yan Zamoyskyi.

The castle was located on a hill at the confluence of the Kovbasna River in Murashka, had a citadel with five towers, and long-range artillery.

In 1595, the fortress was destroyed by the Cossacks of Severyn Nalyvayko, and in 1648 it was captured by the troops of Maksym Kryvonos. The Cossack garrison withstood Polish sieges until 1651, when they were forced to surrender by the army of Hetman Martyn Kalynovsyi.

Since the 18th century, the Sharhorod castle lost its strategic importance and began to crumble. Despite an attempt at restoration made in the 19th century, only the ruins of one tower and fragments of retaining walls, which are located among private buildings, have survived to this day.

Vinnytsia Regional Universal Scientific Library named after Valentyn Otamanovskyi

Architecture

The three-story building of the Vinnytsia Regional Universal Scientific Library named after Valentyn Otamanovskyi was built in 1936.

The decision to build the first city library in Vinnytsia was made back in 1902. The construction was timed to the 50th anniversary of Mykola Hohol's death and at first the library was called "Hohol Library". In 1907, the first two-story public library building was opened.

After the Bolshevik coup, it was replenished with nationalized books from private libraries. Since 1925, the Vinnytsia Central Library has been named after the biologist Klyment Timiryazev. In 1936, it was transferred to a new three-story building.

During World War II, the main building of the library burned to the ground. Only in 1955, the building was reconstructed and the library started working normally again.

In 2022, the library received a new name "Vinnytsia Regional Universal Scientific Library named after Valentyn Otamanovskyi". Today, the Vinnytsia Regional Library not only has a large number of books, but also has access to them online.

Lityn Museum of Local Lore named after Ustym Karmalyuk

Museum / gallery , Architecture

The Lytin Museum of Local Lore named after Ustym Karmalyuk was opened in 1980 in the premises of the entrance gate of the former Lytin prison-fortress.

The prison castle in Lityn was built at the beginning of the 19th century according to the typical project of Andriyan Zakharov next to the old Polish castle, which has not been preserved.

From 1813 to 1835, the national hero Ustym Karmalyuk, the leader of local rebels, was detained here four times. In 1832, while awaiting execution, he was able to escape by dismantling the ceiling of his cell. This was one of many escapes that Karmalyuk managed to make from prisons and hard labor during his struggle.

The museum collection includes about 8,000 objects. The main exposition tells about the causes, development and consequences of the insurgent movement in Podillya in 1813-1835.

The prison building with the cell where Karmalyuk was kept has also been preserved (now on the territory of the district consumer union, access is limited).

Academician Danylo Zabolotny Museum-Manor

Museum / gallery , Palace / manor

The memorial museum of Academician Danylo Zabolotny was founded in 1929 in his native village of Chobotarka (now Zabolotne) in Vinnytsia Region, where he was born, lived and was buried.

An outstanding microbiologist and epidemiologist, academician Danylo Zabolotny founded the world's first department of epidemiology in Odesa, as well as the Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology in Kyiv. In his native house under a thatched roof, the original interior has been completely preserved: a cabinet with the scientist's books, a Zeissian microscope with which he traveled through the deserts of Asia, an old straw block on a hanger. An exposition with wax figures in one of the rooms reproduces the scene of Zabolotny receiving a local patient during his stay in his native village.

On the territory of the manor, a summer kitchen has been recreated and a separate exhibition house has been built, where you can see a large-scale diorama "Danylo Zabolotny on an expedition to fight the plague", which reproduces one of the episodes of the scientist's work in Manchuria. Returning from expeditions, Zabolotny always brought exotic plants with him. The Carpathian birch planted by him, an Ussuri maple and a large dogwood bush still grow in the garden near the house.

Not far from the house is the grave of Danylo Kyrylovych with a tombstone in the style of constructivism by the artist Vasyl Krychevskyi.

The manor-museum of academician Zabolotny is part of the structure of the Institute of Microbiology and Virology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
