Attractions of Chernihiv district

Saint George's Monastery was founded in 1654.

Development began in 1708, when monks from the Pochaiv monastery moved here. The Rozumovsky family was directly related to the development of the monastery. In 1741, the construction of the stone Saint George's Cathedral in the Ukrainian Baroque style began at the expense of Vira, the sister of Oleksiy and Kyrylo Rozumovsky, who married Colonel Yukhym Darahan. This is one of the best examples of a three-domed temple.

During the Second World War, the bell tower was destroyed. Until recently, there was a home for the elderly on the territory of the monastery. In 1995, the monastery was reopened, and in 1997 it was presented with an Orthodox shrine - the famous icon "I am with you and no one is against you".

You can enter the territory with pilgrims or during the service (07:00, 16:00). Maximum strictness in clothing should be observed.

The wooden church of Saint Michael in the village of Maksym in the Chernihiv region was built in the 18th century.

It is a rather large wooden structure with one dome and an attached bell tower.

It has remained unchanged to this day.

The wooden church of Saint Nicholas in Morivsk was built in the 19th century.

During the Soviet rule, the temple was closed. To this day, the Saint Nicholas Church has been preserved and is functioning again, but the recent reconstruction has completely changed its appearance, and the church has lost its historical appearance.

Saint Nicholas Church in Kozelets was built in 1781-1784 on the site of an old wooden church.

The stone single-domed Saint Nicholas Church is located in the historical center of Kozelets on the banks of the Oster River, not far from the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin. The location of the temple marks the southern border of the Kozelets fortress of the XVII-XVIII centuries.

The church has well preserved its original architectural forms in the late Baroque style, with the exception of the bathhouse, the completion of which was replaced by a spherical dome in 1811.

In 1981-1989, restoration works were carried out and the lost finish of the bath was restored. Recently, a new iconostasis was created, the basis of which was the painting of the Volodymyrsky Cathedral.

Today, the Saint Nicholas Church is a working temple.

Savior and Transfiguration Cathedral in Chernihiv is one of the oldest Christian churches in Ukraine, a unique example of ancient Rus architecture.

It was built for Prince Mstyslav Khorobryi, becoming his tomb. Ihor Svyatoslavovych, the hero of "A word about Ihor's campaign", is buried here.

Fragments of ancient Rus frescoes, a wonderful iconostasis of the 18th century have been preserved in the interior. Part of the collection of gold and silver church utensils of the Transfiguration Cathedral is kept in the Chernihiv Historical Museum.

Chernihiv Savior and Transfiguration Cathedral is included in the UNESCO list of cultural values.

Nearby is the archbishop's house (1780), which now houses the archive.

Since 1967, the Transfiguration Cathedral has been part of the National Architectural and Historical Reserve "Ancient Chernihiv".

The Savior and Transfiguration Church was built in 1817 by Hryhoriy Myloradovych, who owned Liubech in the 19th century.

The classicist church is located on the market square. In Soviet times, it was used as a club, warehouses. It was completely revived only in 1992.

Today, this is the only active church in Liubech. The list of the icon of the Mother of God "Liubechska", lost during the years of atheistic persecution, is stored here.

The Shestovytsia archaeological complex is located on the right bank of the Desna River in the "Korovel" tract south of the Shestovytsia village.

It consists of the Shestovytsia Hillfort on the mountain, the foothills, and a burial mound with Scandinavian burials. Most of the complex dates back to the 10th century.

The historical name of this vanished city is unknown, as it is not mentioned in the annals. Presumably, there was a fortress here that protected the southwestern approaches to Chernihiv. The oval-shaped deposits were located on a high promontory formed by the Desna and marshy lowlands. The garrison of the fortress consisted of Varangian mercenaries (Vikings), who either served in the wife of the Chernihiv prince, or controlled Chernihiv on behalf of the Kiev prince. It is also likely that it was an independent Varangian trading colony.

Excavations have been underway since 1925. Archeologists of Ukraine and Norway have recognized the Shestovytsia hillfort as one of the largest Viking settlements in Europe.

Every year in the middle of June, the International Festival of Slavic-Varyaz culture and historical fencing "Korovel" takes place on the territory of the hillfort.

A monument to the People's Artist of Ukraine Tetyana Yablonska was installed on the territory of the House of Artists' Creativity "Sedniv", which has been operating for over 40 years.

The artist created many of her paintings here.

Now, every year in September, the festival of literature and arts "Sedniv Autumn" takes place here.

The Church of the Three Saints in Lemeshi, clearly visible from the highway, was built in 1755 by the Rozumovsky brothers on the grave of their father - Hryhoriy Rozum.

The architectural details of the facades of the church indicate a gradual departure from the baroque style and the predominance of classicism. In 1865, a two-story belfry was added to the church, which was connected to it by a one-story building.

On the walls of the Church of the Three Saints, a fragment of painting from the 18th-19th centuries has been preserved.

The manor of Chernihiv colonel Vasyl Dunin-Borkovsky, general of the Hetmanshyna, was located on the outskirts of Chernihiv, in the village of Bobrovytsia (now a microdistrict of the city).

On the basements of the one-story colonel's house, built in the 1680s and 1690s, there is now a two-story house built later in the classicism style.

The facility is located on the territory of a military unit, access is limited.

The house in the pseudo-Gothic style was built at the end of the 19th century on the then northeastern outskirts of Chernihiv as a craft class of an orphanage.

In 1900-1901, it was rebuilt and expanded to accommodate the historical exposition of the famous patron Vasyl Tarnovsky, Jr., who bequeathed his unique collection of paintings and manuscripts to the city. In 1902, the Chernihiv Museum of Ukrainian Antiquities was opened in the renovated building. More than 700 items were dedicated to Taras Shevchenko.

Until 1979, the Tarnovsky House, as the building was nicknamed, housed the exposition of the Chernihiv Historical Museum, and since 1980, the regional library for youth has been located here.

On March 11, 2022, as a result of the bombing by Russia, the building suffered significant damage. The Russian military aircraft dropped three high-explosive 500-kilogram bombs on the yard of the Tarnovsky House and the nearby stadium. The bomb that fell in the yard destroyed the wall of the Tarnovskyi House, the roof and the interior floors.

The Yeletsky Dormition Monastery in Chernihiv was founded in the 11th century by Prince Svyatoslav Yaroslavovych of Chernihiv (1027-1076) as a country princely residence.

Restored in 1445-1495 after the Mongol-Tatar invasion. Caves from the Ancient Rus period have been preserved. After the reconstruction of the 17th century, the architectural ensemble took on the features of the Ukrainian Baroque: Dormition Cathedral (XII century), 36-meter-high belfry above the gate, Peter and Paul Church with a refectory, cells, Lyzohub tomb, wooden house of Archimandrite Theodosius Uhhlytskyi (1688).

In the strict interior of the cathedral, fragments of ancient frescoes have been preserved.

The Yeletsky Dormition Monastery is part of the National Architectural and Historical Reserve "Ancient Chernihiv".

Zemska school in Lemeshi was built in honor of Nataliya Rozumovska (Rozumykha), the mother of the Hetman of the Left Bank of Ukraine.

It was at this place that the parents' house of the famous Rozumovsky brothers - Oleksiy and Kyrylo - was located. Their descendant Kamil Rozumovsky provided the funds for the construction.

The building is one-story, with a 2-column porch. For the first time in Ukraine, reinforced concrete technologies (columns and profiles of window frames) were used during construction. The author of the project was Ivan Yakubovych.

The Zemska school building in Lemesh is a vivid example of Ukrainian folk style architecture of the beginning of the 20th century.

Since the beginning of the 2010s, the building has been closed and abandoned.
