The monument to the first Kyiv tram was erected for the centenary of this type of transport in Kyiv.
It was here, at Volodymyrskyi Uzviz, that in 1892 the electric tram began to run for the first time in Eastern Europe. The idea belonged to the engineer and entrepreneur Amand Struve. He offered the city authorities an alternative to the traditional end, which was ineffective on Kyiv streets full of steep ups and downs.
The first tram line, 1.5 kilometers long, was put into operation at Oleksandrivskyi Uzviz (now Volodymyrskyi Uzviz). The experiment was considered successful. In just a few years, the total length of Kyiv tram routes was 50 kilometers. The project paid off very quickly, and soon the electric tram completely supplanted horse-drawn and steam-drawn city transport.
The monument, installed in the lower part of the Volodymyrskyi Uzviz, was created by the sculptor Yuriy Kiselyov and the architect Volodymyr Sobtsov.
